What OS should I use?

I'm building a new computer for some old games like Doom and Unreal, games that are 15+ years old because they bring back memories so I have Windows 2000 and XP and I guess I need to use an DosBox something I've never did before so I'm wondering if it makes a difference in the OS?
 
The OS makes no difference. I run old games perfectly with Windows 7 and DOSBox on my laptop.
 
I've had a few issues with some older games like Age of Empires 2. That particular problem was Windows Aero theme screwing up the graphics in game. It was easily fixed though with a simple batch file.
 
If this is a new computer I'd advise you stick to the newer OSes because of driver support. I'd use Windows 7 64-bit myself.
 
My impression of his post was, he has 2000 and XP and was wondering which one would be better for older games.
 
Both 2k and XP are good for older games. Personally I would go with XP though as it is still supported by GPU manufacturers, meaning that you can run current generation GPU instead of being stuck with the Geforce 8000 and 9000(?) or Raedon DX9 (x1900?) solutions, and you can still play modern games, like MW3.

Windows 2000 on a new computer is a bit of a daft idea, XP not so daft. ;)
 
I would use the xp and if the games are 16 bit, you would have to use a 32 bit OS. 16 bit games are not supported in a 64 bit OS.
 
XP, it's good for both new and old games.
As I know there are only 5 games that can't run on XP:
Black Ops 2, NFS The Run, NFS MW 2, Sleeping Dogs, BF3.
 
So basically the new ones don't work on XP then. You can add Just Cause 2 to that list too.
 
Fifa 13 still works with XP. (I have tried it)
Trackmania 2 still works on XP (I have tried it)
GTA 5 will work on XP.
