Hi all

Ive just joined the community here and im trying to school myself and improve my skills with recovery ect!
I have atm a 500gb sata drive that recently failed in a machine. The drive had windows 7 on it and wasnt partitioned. Now i have removed the driver and placed it into a case and im connecting it to another machine with the hope of recovering some important holiday vids that were on the desk top!
On the other machine i have recovery software installed and waiting!
Now when i connect the drive to the machine it bleeps to say its seen it and it shows up in my computer as drive E , it also spins up with no clicking ect.
Thing is, once plugged into my machine, it sort of freezes it up so the recovery software wont open ect??
If i try to open the drive E the machine whites out and i get the not responding message!
As soon as i remove the drive usb, the machine instantly becomes normal and the recovery software then opens lol
Just wondered if im doing something wrong here ! Dont know how i can do recovery if plugging it stops my machine from working?
Any tips would be very welcome guys!
Cheers

Not sure what you mean by using recovery from the one machine to the other drive. You most likely have a bad hard drive. Try connecting it the computer without using the usb case. If the computer still freezes up when its connected then there is nothing you can do.

Sorry, prob explained it wrong, ive took the drive out of my original machine after it would no longer boot up.. Then i put that bad drive into an external case and connected it to another windows 7 machine via usb ..
The machine i attached it to has the recovery software on it so i was hoping it would be able to go into the drive and recover from it..

Again, I don't know what you mean by recovery software. Do you mean reinstall windows on that drive? Or just copy data from bad drive to good drive? In any case, the drive seems like its toast.

Simple answer usually. There are several free recovery software available. If you cannot access it any other way and don't want to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars to get it back, thats the way to do it.

Johnb35, im talking about the programs you can download the scan a damaged disk and are meant to be able to retrieve lost data from them.. They advise to remove the busted drive and reconnect to another machine via usb then scan with the software! Thing is none of the several programs ive now got will scan or even function with the damaged drive connected so i can use them! I should be able to scan the drive and collect data from it and save it to new machine ( so they say) None of these programs will even open when the damaged drive is connected so just wondered what was causing them to jam up!
Would of thought they were able to get around this somehow to be able to do there job!
Im guessing that im not ganna get into it now but it seems odd that the drive spins up ok and can be seen in ( my computer) but cant be opened!! Being told by people that if i can see it and it spins up ok i should be able to get lucky and save data from it!!
Maybe its just knackered then!!

Your drive is defective and causing issues with whatever machine you plug it into. If you want the data off the drive that badly, you'll need to send it out to a data recovery center.

Basically what you are talking about is diagnostic software that will scan the drive for errors and fix them so the drive works correctly. However, when you connect this drive and the machine freezes or it doesn't recognize it at all then the drive is beyond repair by a normal person and must be sent away to a professional data recovery center as Voyagerfan has said.
