Upgrading my Dell XPS 400 Desktop to a modern gaming PC. Is this a good choice?

Turning the Dell XPS 400 Desktop Computer into a gaming computer.

Can't do it.... The Dell case is a BTX case and an ATX motherboard won't work in it. You will need to purchase a new case as well.
 
You also need either an intel z77 motherboard or an amd processor as currently it's mxed, and you'll get way better performance out of a waaayyyyyyy cheaper processor and mobo and a better graphics card
 
Any atx case that you like. Also it would be a good idea to get a new power supply. The units supplied in OEM pc's aren't very good at all. Only powerful enough to run the components supplied with it. When you upgrade the video card you need a new psu. And I would recommend picking a different motherboard so you can spend more on memory and a better video card.

Just noticed you picked an intel processor and an AMD motherboard, you'll need an intel motherboard if you want to use the processor. Get 8gb of memory, hd7850 video card and 650 watt corsair power supply.
 
No problem. I've just noticed you're in New Zealand, so you can't buy from Newegg, but PC Case Gear is an Australian store which may ship out to you, so look on there for the parts I listed.
