i guys i have this Pc lenovo that i installed an ISO of win7 but it doesn't accept the key # that is on the lable on the box.

my question is it possible to install a good linux op system without having the full win7 installed? Thanks

Linux does not require windows 7 at all. If you want to dual boot windows and linux then you will still need to fix your windows installation.

You need to get an appropriate windows 7 disc / ISO for your key. Where did your windows 7 product key come from? Was it a boxed product, OEM on the side of the machine?

The alternative is to activate over the phone with Microsoft. Advise them you have a valid windows 7 key, however don't have the correct disc. They will be able to confirm the product key is genuine or not, whether or not they will give you an activation code to work with your ISO I do not know.

Thanks Bro; so you say i can't install Linux without installing windows fully?...
if i could install win7 fully i realy did not need to install Linux.

i already tried to activate it on line but no avail

Me again i just want to install an op system for free, i don't need windows at all if linux can do the job and if it's free i'm on it,

but can it be installed from on line linux downloads and how i go about it? thanks

slow down and we can straiten this out.

Ask yourself one question. What do I want to do with the computer? Does it require Netflix, or computer games (real games, not internet ones)?

If no to the above, then you can install linux without windows. Just download either Mint or Ubuntu, burn them to a CD/DVD/USB key and boot to it. Choose install and follow the instructions. When it ask you what to do with the disk, choose wipe disk and install. Finish teh process and you now have a Linux only machine.

The key has to match the version of windows 7 you are installing. So if windows home premium was installed on the lenovo from the factory with the key then you have to install the same version. You can't install ultimate or pro with the same key. If you need a copy of the correct version, then let us know.

How i know the correct copy?thanks and have you all an happy New Year.

You will need the key on the bottom and a windows 7 pro OEM disk to get it to work. It has to be OEM or it will not accept the key.

Not true... He can use the ISO downloads from digital river and it will activate just fine. But again, it must be the same version as the key is designed for.

Havent tried with Vista/7/8. But I know XP works, done it many times with OEM that I did service on when they had no CD.

I have used the mydigitallife iso files and have activated OEM keys with no issue.

Hi john35; i actually used this site" mydigitallife "to download the Win7 ISO,i Tried both Win7 Home Edition and (Win7pro as it's labeled in the box) but both failed to accept the key.I still have both ISO win7 Cd's,and the Win7Pro loaded on the Lenovo PC.

another question please. if i install Linux will it accept Acrobat Programs so i can open Pdfs files? i can use other pc to make my music sheet and convert to pdfs files then open the pdfs music sheet to display on the lenovo if this can be done then i can install the linux OPS. if so what's the best linux distro?

Also can i use a CDWR CD to download the linux ISO?

Let me ask a different question here.

The key on the sticker lists what operating system? If its not windows 7 then that key is useless.

On the Lenovo Box in the same sticker where the Product key is, it says Win7 Pro lenovo of Simgapura

You must use the pro version ISO then. Also double check the key. Sometimes O's look like the number zero and vice versa and 8's look like B's.
