Why?

Well here goes.

Why are we still limited to a computer in a box so to speak that requires our inputs and outputs to be routed to a box containing the computers various components?

In my humble opinion that mindset is one of the main reasons that we have failed to see the technology available in today's market spread and become more user friendly in terms of human and even machine interface.

There has to be a way to overcome this box mindset which would release the so called genie from the bottle and result in a tremendous leap in computer use in everyday life and at the same time a huge advance in interface technology!

In other words I want the D**n thing to talk to me when I'm outside, fix my coffee in the morning, even remind me to take my pills on time every day no matter where I'm at. I don't want to carry around a pad or laptop that I have to cut on and off or pull out the trusty phone and start punching keys or a touch screen!

I want the interface device that I carry to be tiny and I want it to talk to me via an earbud and I want it linked to everything in my world that I now use and even some things I haven't yet dreamed about!!!

Now I know it can be done and I have many ideas of my own so how do we do it???????

Seems like you want star trek, and sad to say, we are not there yet. Close but not there.

Personally, though, most of that can already do. The make your coffee for you, there are pots to do that out. I have a kenmore that does it. Just tell it when, for instance 0530 hours, put the water and grounds in and press start.

This is a little more difficult than making coffee. DO you mean that you want it to have a conversation with you? Or just to tell you a story? The first is really difficult now, but I don't see any tech reason that it could not work. The second is called an audio book. you can get them from practically anywhere and just need speakers, which could be wired outside to work. You can use something like dragon to take commands from you and do it.

TO remind you of your medicine, just set a reminder using a calander applet. I do that, and my computer gives a loud warning sound every day at 0600 and 1800 hours to remind me to take my medicine. Not difficult at all.

I think what you are asking for though is a computer that is voice dependent and auto updating (like get a new medicine and it links with the pharmacy/doc to know when to tell you to take it), and interconnected. It would be possible to do this, but it would be expensive and complicated. We are getting there though.

the core of what is holding us back is the sheer fact that our computers and specificaly cpu's, arnt nothing compared to the amount of data there is on stand by to be processed, because our best of all cpu in the world just cant keep up with the amount of data that is constantly being acquired. thats why there are such programs like folding at home. to help with the process of data. even all the cpu's connected wouldnt do it fast enough. we are on the brink of a change in cpu design, which im thinking will be some sort of optical cpu, and eventualy they will put an end to "old" tech like i7 andwhat not. once the tech changes to something entirly different, we will always be playing catch up while we wait.

the more data that can be processed faster, the quicker things will begin to change our way of life, just like how it is now, compared to just 80 years ago, even while some of our grand parents lived when they were young. revolutionary things are to come that will do the same thing. our grandkids or great grand kids will say that our current tech today was lame and slow, cuz then maybe, there tech will be like what the OP was saying.

no. That is not at all right. Current CPUs are not the bottleneck of modern systems. They spend most of their time waiting on data to process.

Programs like FAH are there to allow scientist to have supercomputer power without needing to spend millions on a supercomputer. Plus if you did a little research (specifically about FAH), you will notice that there are hundreds of separate programs using the program for processing data from all over the planet.

Not saying that optical computing will not change things a lot, but it is still a decade or more off. That aside, it will not be replacing the i7 type processors because of a lack of power, but because of electrical leakage. Once you get down to about 15nm or so, it will become a real problem.

For what the OP wants, it is more a lack of programming than a lack of power than is the issue.

To the OP, you can do all of that, however the computer isnt the issue, its the hardware and interface with all the other 'stuff' that is the issue. You can already smart wire your house and use programmable logic to make all of that happen. In fact, the things you are asking for could be done with a mobile phone.

I don't know about him, but I don't trust another person to be in my house every day. So a compterized house would do just fine. Then again, you could have some mad bragging rights with a setup like that.

Agree with Bigfellla.

I will have to agree with Bigfellla.

The mobile phone is the key to an out of the box system and a Blue tooth or similar interface that would allow you to use the phone without touching it for info and system commands flowing in both directions is surely possible.

To all of you that are hung up on "what's there now doesn't allow us to do this or that" please remember one thing.

I grew up in my younger days in a time when none of what is there now was there!!!

If everyone waited for it to be there or for someone else to come up with an idea or new way of doing this or that then the future stops now!

Remember one thing from an old fart.

99.9% of everything we as humans use in our lives started off as a dream or idea that was turned to reality by hard work and perseverance. Everything in the future is out there right now, we as a species just have to be smart enough to imagine it!!!:)

set up an exchange server and connect your smartphone to it. you can get most of the stuff you listed there from outlook/smartphone email client

and googlenow/siri talk to you

Its not the software of computing power (PLCs run of a toaster), its the hardware interfaces and connectivity that is expensive.

We can start by turn the smartphone to a projector, use wall or glass to show video and fine tune the voice command(typing). that will be a big step to the future.

It don't really come down to, "I know it can be done", but more of, are we ready for it, or is it in demand. We have the technology today, but you need investors that are willing to take this idea from fiction to reality. It will be a gamble that wouldn't be in your favor. After you get the investors, you'll need other companies to go along with this idea and incorporate it in they're products to be capable with your product. Like I said, it's a gamble 'NOT' in your favor, but then again, if it took off, you'll be the next billionaire!
