Is it possible to put a HD into a laptop (replacing the existing one as there is no slave bay) and use command to format it to exfat leaving it completely empty?. I've put the drive in but it wont let me right click format as its running the operating system just thought it may work in command.

You could do it, but it is simpler than using a command. Just boot to parted magic or gparted and format the drive from there.

Or get an external hard drive enclosure and hook up the hard drive via USB, they can be found for around $20 or less.

The drive I will be formatting will be the only one in the laptop so the operating system will be running on it, will parted magic partition this off then format the rest as exfat?

Thanks for the replys.

It is simple to do. All you need to do is burn partedmagic to a disk, boot to the disk, and then format the drive. You only need the disk and the HDD.

well I had a go last night with parted magic but got no joy :(
the program ran fine and I apparently formatted every partition to exfat (which only took seconds for 320g?? the drive may have already been empty but still seemed a bit fast.) but it still would not show in the xbox. I've ordered a usb to sata lead from the tinterweb which should come next week so ill have a mess about with it when I get that rather than keep switching my current laptop hard drive in and out.

Did you hit apply after you created the partition layout? If not, then no changes were written to the disk.

Yes. there were 4 different sectors and i highlighted each one and formatted, each only took about 3 seconds before it said it was done and they disappeared from the pending operations list. I assumed it would take alot longer than that to format  one thing I couldn't find was how to un partition the drive?

to unpartition, you right click and select delete iirc.

As far as how long it takes to partition, that is dependent on a lot of things. If it is just a standard HDD with SATA interface, it should not take long at all.

But since you are having dificulties with it, do the following. Download and burn DBAN to a CD. Then boot to the CD with the drive that you want to format installed. When it asks you what to do, type in AutoNuke. That will run a DOD 3 pass on the drive. Then use parted magic to make the drive ExFAT.

If that does not work, then you will have to test the drive to ensure it works.

Thanks, I really appreciate all your help. I'll post back when I get round to doing it next :)
