Is this hard drive okay for gaming?

Hi all,

I was having issues with my windows 8 build and my hard drive is on its last legs so I just had a question.

A coworker of mine gave me a new WD Cavivier Green 3TB

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136874

I was impressed it was 6Gbps and 3 TB but when I looked at the RPM it just said intellipower... I immediate figured this is a 5400 or 5900 RPM drive.

Would this be okay for gaming? L4d2 maybe a little BF3?

My current hard drive is the WD Blue 640 GB but makes strange noises so I figured id take it out, and throw in the Green.

Thanks in advance

att

It would not be the best choice but it should work. It is built for a low power system and it has the performance to match. I would get a better 2tb drive if you need all of that storage space.

Just FYI, for mechanical drives as long as you are at least SATA 2 you are fine you will still be limited by the disks. Most current 5400/7200 RPM HDDs don't even hit the bandwidth cap for SATA 1. Don't measure performance on what SATA revision it has.

Allright... I just don't feel like spending money on a new Drive, so I figured this is better than nothing and I don't need all that space at all. I would be fine with 256 g for space

It will work, however it will also go to sleep when not used, giving the potential for frame drops, moments of freezing or the game crashing all together.

As an example, I had LoL on my Samsung F3 before it died and it played great. When I got my SSD's, as you have to wait for everyone to load before you can play anyway, I opted to keep some more space on my SSD's free and install it on my WD Caviar Green. It will freeze or skip at random points, not very often, but in a game like LoL, that is game changing, as it would be for any fast paced game. I then go and put it back on my main drive, this time the SSD's rather than a performance HDD, and the skipping goes.

Green drives are not worth it for main drives imho because of the going to sleep. As a storage drive, they are fantastic because of the price and power usage, but not as a boot drive

Okay thanks. Maybe I will just use this drive for storage.... It was just given to me. I want to wait until SSD have 512 drives for the 200 dollar range then I will shell the money out.

Get a good 7200 RPM Seagate drive.

Ive never had an issue with a Seagate drive, im actually installing one into an enclosure now... people say the western digital black are better though... seagates are a bit better on the wallet tho :D

Thanks for all the feedback
