x-post (Help me figure out this extremely odd networking issue?)

Backstory:

I used to help out a friend's mother with her work computer when she got viruses, but never went much beyond that. They had a difficult problem the other day and I told them it would probably take much more work to troubleshoot and they should use their main IT guy that they had been using. She said "oh, he's dead".

So now they're desperate for help and I'm trying to fix this for them, however they are only open 8am-5:30pm and I work 8:30-4:30pm so I have 1hr of my lunch break and 1hr after work to try and help them.

Problem:

The computer(Windows XP) will lock up after being online for about 2 minutes and seemingly depending on what programs are opened. At first I found some viruses with a Malwarebytes scan, but I took the drive out and scanned it and it's fully clean now.

Oddest part of the problem, it appears to only happen when the Ethernet cable is plugged in. I was able to run a full scan and install multiple programs with the Ethernet cable out and the computer never locked up. With the network cable in, the odd thing is it's not network connectivity that freezes -- but the entire computer becomes unusable. Task manager won't open, and everything else will stop responding. The only way to get around the problem is to hard power the machine.

I'm going there tonight with the intent to try and remove 1 stick of RAM and/or run a diagnostics CD on the PC. Beyond that I am out of ideas. Has anyone heard of this problem before? I'd really like to help them but I might have to tell them to hire someone that can look at the PC full-time if I can't figure this one out.

That is a really strange problem. I am guessing the computer is running windows XP?

I am also guessing that backing up, and reinstalling the OS is not an option? I doubt it is the RAM . So if the computer does not go online then it does not crash?

Yes, XP. Sorry for not mentioning that.

I could back them up and reinstall, but they have ALOT of custom apps and stuff that probably only the deceased IT guy knows about. I'd rather not get my hands that dirty.

I had originally thought RAM, but when I saw the PC act normal when the cable was removed, I doubted it.

Correct -- if the PC remains unplugged it works fine.

One person I mentioned it to mentioned a possible "corrupted TCP/IP stack". They said they've seen an issue where they had to uninstall and reinstall the TCP/IP to fix their problem.

My first idea is going to be to install a USB wireless device on their PC and see if they can work like that, to see if it is network connectivity in general, or something with this particular LAN card.

You could remove the TCP/IP but I think trying the wireless is a better idea. If you get that working then you have a good work around until you figure out what is wrong with network card.

You could try removing the device and reinstalling the newest driver but no promises there either.

Haha it's pretty rough. And it's for a Doctor's office -- the kind that aren't very technically savvy and also put alot of pressure on me. Kind of got thrown on the fire without knowing.

Really appreciate the support!

Could be tcp/ip or just a bad lan port. If they want to stay wired then you could try a dedicated nic card to see what happens.

Nothing worked. Even with the wireless adapter and running the netsh reset commands, as soon as their is internet connectivity to this machine -- it freezes within two minutes.

I don't like to give up on situations, but I've exhausted all I can think of for this issue. I told them my next steps would be to backup and restore the PC. Unfortunately I don't have time for that with our schedules so I advised them to look for another IT guy that doesn't have a full-time job.

I would have loved to find the actual fix for this, but I'm fully stumped and have no idea where to go from here.

damn I was sure that was going to work. I figure the amount of time someone will spend to figure out what is wrong with it will be ridiculous . Sorry you couldn't find the fix
