I got windows 8 up and running and installed start8. The problem I have is that with Skype I had to download it from the store. This means I have to switch to the metro interface to use. Is there any ways I could move it to the desktop? Also what is a good basic program to check my compoents temps.just curious to see how hot they run :p

click on the yellow folder in the task bar, go to your c drive then program files x86 and find skype. open the folder and select the exe file for skype. right click it and select send to desktop. you will have an icon on your desktop for skype

Another weird Windows 8 quirk :o
right click on a program in the modern UI all applications menu, you get an option to pin it to start. You get another option to pin it to the taskbar. How much more programming would have been required to add another option to pin it to the desktop? And I thought I was lazy :D
Perhaps this part of the UI design decision was conceived of by those same logic-defying designers who decided to remove the "hibernate" option from the default shut down options :D

Unfortunately, there's no option for creating a shortcut. There should be an option to "open file location" which will bring up explorer. There, you can create a shortcut to the desktop.

Doubt this works.

Still opens the metro version.

Well, a desktop/ taskbar pinned metro app, in most cases (IE is an exception) will switch us to metro when clicked on. I probably got his question wrong.
Thought he wanted a shortcut on the desktop, didn't realize he downloaded a metro version of Skype. I had this Windows 7 Skype standalone installer saved on my other computer, and when installed in windows 8, it runs the regular desktop mode, didn't even know they have a metro version of the thing until now, my bad :P
