Geoff's New Build :)

I am not 100% sure, but I think optical decoding is done in the receiver, not the sound card. So integrated would be the same as a STX in that regard.

I think he'll be all right with the onboard sound.

It looks good now Geoff. What OS are you going to use?

I believe that's correct, as my receiver is what decodes it into DTS or Dolby. Worst case scenario I swap my X-Fi over.

I have Windows 8 installed on my laptop but I'm not convinced I like it over 7, so I may install Windows 7 Pro on my desktop.

Yeah should be fine, just be aware of AMD drivers, Windows 8 and Photoshop though. I get screen flickering with Windows 8 and AMD drivers in Photoshop CS5.1 unless I disable GPU acceleration.

Yeah the socket is changing I think. :/

I'd get everything mentioned in this thread though. :)

If you are not needing it right now, I would wait and see. If haswell is not that much better, then you can still grab this. If it is a good leap, then get it and you won't be having buyers remorse.

early reviews show that there's not much increase.

But we should wait and see! :D

Not much better raw processing power, but better integrated graphics and probably less power hungry. Also less heat due to lower voltage (3th gen were worse in temps then 2nd)

Yeah, from the link I posted they compared the 4770K to 3770K and the difference wasn't that great. Besides, the prices will be high on initial release anyways.

Any last comments on this build?

No reason to wait ;P.
Also, Intel has no real need to increase performance even more, since there is no competing factor...

I want to see photos when it's done. And because you have a 5D Mk III, you have no excuse not to take some good ones. :P
