Quad core processor

How do you compare a quad core processor to a single processor? I haven't bought a new computer since when processors were all single. Is a quad core processor 1.4 GHz as fast as say a 2.4 GHz processor?

It's more efficient than a single core, in the fact that it has 4 cores running at 1.4Ghz so it can do more work at once in a faster time than the single core could, even though it's running at a faster speed.

I have a question about this some programs run on only one core so would a single core processor at 2.4 Ghz be better than a 3.0 Ghz quad?

No, the quad has 4 3.0ghz cores, and doesnt have to share other resources with the processor, whereas the single core may be sharing resources with the 2.4ghz core.

Its like rush hour on the highway...4 lanes are more effective than 1 or 2. Even with just 2 cars (or tasks) more lanes is better.

You can't even get new single core processors anymore, so it's irrelevant.

Even with apps that aren't optimized for multi-core processors, you can be running more apps simultaneously.

Like said not to many single cores left. Compare, they have more cores, lol. About the only way to compare is run something with a single thread and see how they stack up. That is if they are the same architecture and mhz. But the multi would still probably win because there is all kinds of backgrounds things going on and the multi could handle it better.

Back to above statememnt. If they are the same architecture and the program has multi threads the multi core would probably will. If the program is single threaded, with the single having a 1ghz advantage it would probably will. Like I say if this is within the same architecture.
