Outlook Problems

Got a few problems with Outlook here.

I'm using Outlook 2013, and my Grandad is using Outlook 2007. Whenever I send him photos which are embedded in emails (like below), he can't right click on the photos and save them to his computer. This has been a problem ever since he upgraded to Outlook 2007 back in August last year, and the problem only occurs when I send him emails (he can save embedded photos from everybody apart from me).

When he right clicks on photos in my emails, he only gets these options, with no 'Save as' option.

How do we solve this? I'm pretty sure the problem is at my end and may be down to the way in which my emails are being formatted. I installed Outlook 2007 in a virtual machine and sent myself some test emails with formatting options enabled/disabled in my Outlook 2013, and still the problem wasn't solved.

Anybody know what's up?
Thanks!

It may be why. I don't know much about outlook but it is probably due to the fact that they are physically embedded into the email as to why they are not retrievable. Some sort of read-only attribute like if you are running a Word Document off of a network where another user is already modifying it.

Yeah I think that the problem is down to the way that my emails are being formatted, but it seems odd he can save embedded images from everybody who he receives emails from, but not me. He can't save mine for some reason.

Anybody know how to change the formatting of emails in Outlook 2013 and which settings to change?

Ah. Hold on.

SYMPTOMS
When you right-click an image in an HTML e-mail message in Microsoft Office Outlook 2007, the Save Picture As command is not present.

CAUSE
This problem may occur if the image file is embedded in the e-mail message.

WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, follow these steps:
Open the e-mail message, and then right-click the image that you want to save.
Click Copy.
Start the imaging program that you want to use.
On the Edit menu, click Paste.

Note This step may vary depending on the imaging program that you use. For more information, see the product documentation for the imaging program.
On the File menu, click Save to save the image.

STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

If what I am reading is right, there is not much you can do about it. Upgrading to 2013 from 2007 may fix it, or forwarding to an external account like GMail.

Why don't you just attach them? Can't you double click on the filename to the right of where it says message. Usually when attaching they get embeded in the email anyway.

I originally thought the problem was to do with Outlook 2007 itself, but he can save embedded images from other people? Maybe it's because they're not using Outlook? I don't know. Or maybe if I send him an email from Outlook 2007 it will work? Might try and see. It's worth a shot...

And John, yes, he can save attached images, so I might just have to attach them rather than embed them.

Hmm...if you try using Outlook 2007 to send them, it may fix it. Otherwise, what happens if you use GMail or Yahoo Mail or something?

Sorry I cant help more.

You may just have to attach them like John said.

I'm going to try sending an email with an embedded image from both Outlook 2007 and my Gmail account, just to see if it works.

Something else I've just thought of is that I'm using Microsoft Exchange and he's using POP3 - maybe that has something to do with it? Kind of doubt it though.

Thanks guys. :)

I've done some testing:

When I send emails with embedded images from Outlook 2013 to 2007, I can't save the embedded photo, however when I send emails embedded images from Outlook 2013 to 2010 I can save the images.

When I send emails with embedded images from Outlook 2007 to 2007, I can't save the images.

When I send emails with embedded images from my Gmail account to Outlook 2007, I still can't save the images.

So it looks like Ashley was right, and the problem is to do with Outlook 2007. Looks like my Grandad needs to use another email client.

Thanks all. :)

Why are you embedding images? Wouldn't be simpler to just attach images to the email itself?

I embed them because it's easier for the reader to see the pictures and I can embed lots of pictures and keep the size of the email down.

I just sent an email this morning with about 10 attached photos and it was 11MB. If I had embedded those photos into the email (after resizing them of course), the email would have been less than 1MB.

But it appears that Outlook 2007 can't save embedded images, which is a pain. All the other versions of Outlook which I tested could though. :/
