Issues with GTX 660 Ti

Hey fellas -- first time post. :o

I have recently built a new rig, and all went swimmingly well, no issues. However, I believe my gfx card is not functioning as well as it should be. I'm running a geforce GTX 660 Ti with drivers all up to date. I lag my face off in Guild wars 2, which isn't THAT demanding. I've been recommended to disable the on board intel gfx, but that does not seem to help the issue.

My build is as follows:
asrock z77 Extreme4 mobo
evga geforce gtx 660ti
i5-3.4hgz
8gb g.skill ram
300gb WD ram
500w CPU

My question: why am I lagging so hard with a brand new, mid-high level setup?

Thanks, fellas!

Is it just that game? If so it might be internet lag. What's your average framerate? You can use FRAPS to check.

Also try turning off all reflections, because that setting gave me a lot of lag in that game.

I'm also thinking it's more a connection problem then an hardware issue.
Did you build the rig yourself?
What's the brand and model of your psu?
Try offline, heavy games and see or you are getting the same stutter.

Hey guys, thanks for the replies.

I'm also playing LoL and D3, and I don't have issues with them because they aren't too demanding. However, that said, I recently installed this free Steam game, Alien Swarm (at a friend's request) and I can't play that for more than 10 minutes without my screen going black and the audio turning into a loud repetitive action sound. If I minimize, my card will give me a notification that something went wrong and it recovered successfully. Then, I'll return to the game, play for a bit, then the instances occurs again and I stop playing out of fear of damage.

I built it myself and my build with brands is as follows:

Intel Core i5-3570k Ivy Bridge 3.4ghz LGA 1155 77W Quad-Core
ASRock Z77 Extreme4 LGA 1155 Mobo
EVGA 02G-P4-3660-KR Geforce GTX 660 Ti 2GB 192-bit GDDR5 PCI-E 3.0 x16
G.Skill Ripjaw X Series 8GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600
WD VelociRaptor 300GB HDD
Win7 64bit
500W Rocketfish PSU (Just bought a new PSU and awaiting shipment: Corsair 850W)

It seems intermittent in terms of severity, but it's constant in GW2. In a major city, I'm getting about 15-20fps and when I'm free zoning it's about 30 +/-. I can't partake in any events because it's a disaster and not worth trying lol.

Thanks for the help!

Stop using your computer for gaming until the new PSU shows up. The one you have is dreadful and can go bang and take out components if you're not careful. Try gaming with the new PSU but under no circumstances would I advise gaming anymore with what you currently have. If you have integrated video on your motherboard then switching to that would be best until the new PSU arrives. That's probably what is causing your problems.

Thanks, Denther -- Noted and following your advice.

Once it arrives and I install it, I'll pop back on with results.

Thanks, again!

Cheers!

I used to have GTX 670 FTW version, with i5-3570k.

I played Aion, and it made my computer lag (performance wise, not internet speed). On the other hand, games like Borderlands 2, Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3 did not bring down my FPS below 60 at any point in time.

Conclusion? Games like Aion and GW2 just shows wayyy more objects in game, at least more than most games on average. I don't think it's possible to keep 60fps constant when you're with 100+ players on your screen constantly casting spells and what not.

If that's the kind of lag you're talking about, then there's not much you can do... even if you have two GTX 690 cards + i7-3930k, it still won't be enough to handle the game if you see like 500+ players on the screen, at least that's what I think. I'm sure there are instances / fortress instances with like more than 200 people attacking each other, no?

Even then it shouldn't be running that slowly.

I run on almost full settings with Guild Wars 2 and I don't lag too badly in it. It's a very CPU dependent game and the graphics card is more than enough. The CPU is too. Also the other issues you described sound like a lack of power being provided to your core components.

I agree that it is CPU dependent, whether it is GW2 or Aion. When I play Aion, I do get 60FPS with their new crazy graphics engine. But as the OP mentioned, at places like towns where it is heavily populated with users, can't do much to bring up your FPS 60 constant unless you're using a super computer or something.. :S right?. I'm sure you experience the same when there's like 500 monsters attack you at once. I think the OP is more concerned with those FPS drops, rather than the average FPS. I'm sure the average FPS is fine, in combat and whatnot, just not when there's heavy action going on.

This is not normal behavior. He should be getting at the very least 45+ outside of cities but he's not. Even in cities it shouldn't be that low. I know what you're saying and you're right to some extent but that's not the issue he's having. And again he's having crashing issues with black screens and audio problems resulting from that. It's not the games.

Ah, missed the second part of this crashing and what not. I was strictly referring to the FPS :P my bad!

Yeah. You're right though, framerate can tank in MMO's with lots of people around. Stormwind in WoW always used to kill my already measly performance on my old computer.

Thanks for all of the replies, fellas. PSU just came in, Corsair 850W. Problem solved. FPS has dramatically increased in each scenario I listed.

Thanks again for your help!
