Hi everyone, I have a HP Pavillion dv5 Notebook Pc. It crashed bigtime and recuva disks could not reboot it so I purchased a new HD for it.
The OS was Vista, but I prefer XP and tried to load XP home edition onto the new HD, would not load comes up error, so does XP Pro. This laptop is just for use with some old programs that won't run on my other laptop which is windows 8.
When I hit F2 it comes up with the following info.
Notebook Model: HP Pavillion dv5 Notebook PC
Product No: FQ373PA#ABG
Total memory: 2048 MB
Insyde H20 Version: F.OB
Serial no. etc
Factory installed OS: Vista.

Does this mean that I can only install Vista? I thought with a new hard drive you could install any windows OS.
The notebook didn't come with a disc, so can I use the recovery discs I made to reinstall vista onto the new hard drive or do I have to purchase a vista cd. I would prefer XP any help greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Tabby ;)

What specific error does it come up with? Does it just BSoD upon loading the Windows XP CD?

Computer illiterate, I'm not sure if IDE or AHCI mode,
The message is: A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer, If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. Run chkdsk / F to check for Hard drive corruption and then restart computer.
Technical information:
***Stop: 0x0000007B (0xF78D2524, 0XC0000034, 0X00000000, 0X00000000)

I have checked the hard drive, all ok.
Windows Setup starts blue screen, gets to, Setup is loading files then the error message.

This is what one Tech has told me:
According to the product description I am finding for that notebook, there is no support for XP. And that is common for newer hardware to NOT have drivers or other support for older operating systems.

If you cannot find legacy XP drivers for your hardware, you cannot install XP on it. And to that, note that XP is well over 10 years old and designed to support hardware from the DOS era, 10 years before that. And XP was designed with security almost as an afterthought because most users did not have high-speed (or any) Internet access and badguys had not yet discovered how lucrative the Internet would be. So if anything, you should be trying to move forwards and not backwards by installing Windows 7 (or 8) instead of XP, if not wanting Vista anymore.

I realize that is not probably what you wanted to hear, but those are the facts.

So I'm assuming that the recuva discs cannot be used on the new hard drive and I will need to buy Vista as I do not have the disc, didn't come with the notebook.

Many thanks

Are your hard drives configured in IDE or AHCI mode?
Computer illiterate, I'm not sure if IDE or AHCI mode, Don't have the comp with me to pull the hard drive and check.

Checking for IDE or AHCI is pretty easy. I'l lead you through it.

Reboot your PC and when it hits POST (When if flashed HP before booting Windows) Look for a key you need to hit to get to the setup. It might be F2, F10, Del, Esc... Once into the BIOS look for your storage information. There should be an option called SATA Mode or SATA Operation. In there you should see if your drives are IDE or AHCI. For XP you want them to be in IDE mode.

If you make any changes in the BIOS be sure to save them before exiting. If you make changes that you do not want to keep select exit without saving.
