Windows 7 Invalid Key

Around a month ago I did a HDD swap on my Toshiba Satellite P500. With that, I also decided to do a clean install of Windows rather than cloning the previous drive. I downloaded the Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit iso from Microsoft and made a bootable USB thumb drive. Everything went smoothly during installation. I used the product key found in the sticker on the bottom of my laptop and it was accepted.

However, around a week ago I started getting pop ups that my key was invalid and that I needed to activate it using Microsoft's phone activation. I called up the hotline but whenever I dictate to the machine the first set of numbers/letters from the key, it tells me that it's an invalid key. Even typing in the product key with the keypad of my phone ends up with the machine telling me it's invalid and the machine hung up (very rude).

As much as possible I do not want to purchase another product key.

I would contact "Toshiba" about it. See if they have recovery disk for your computer and how much it is. That is about the only way I think to get your laptop set back up.

Just to be clear, your computer came with Windows 7 Home Premium x64, right? The serials are different for 32 and 64 bit versions.

Interesting and surprised. the key different? Changing motherboard and different, video. not adding memory and 32 and 64 on same computer. Im guessing and you may be right. thats a first for me. A switch with motherboards has never been a problem except it did require a phone call. a new key only. always worked for me.

The keys are not different. They work with either 32 or 64 bit. I got a 32 and 64 bit copy from NJIT (two different keys) and I've used them both with 64-bit installs without an issue.

Keys aren't different. They're only different for the different editions and product media.

Justin, when you say you are trying to type the product key into the automated phone line, are you typing in the Windows product key? If so, that's not how you do it. Activate by telephone and type in the numbers it gives you once you've selected your country.

It worked. I was dictating the wrong key. I'm a massive idiot. lol

Yes you're right XP Pro x86 and x64 did have different keys. Most copies of x64 were volume license but I think it may have been available in OEM too. But either way, the keys were different.
