What happens when XP support ends?

Like I said, it's approaching 12 years old...

Well when I think about it...I don't know...12 years does not really seem so much to me...as long as it does the job I am doing on it right then I don't know...then in that case I wouldn't care even if it came out in 1995. honestly. But I guess that's just me.:D
You know...considering that XP is the OS which use was the LONGEST and it's still present I have a feeling that MANY MANY TOO MANY people might still be using it for the next many years...
I for instance decided to use it AT LEAST until 2020. lol.But who knows...maybe in 2020. I might decide to continue use it even longer...who knows...

Cheers S.T.A.R.S.!
I mean...everyone!

xD

It's time for XP to die anyway. It's been out for over 12 years. 7 and 8 are far superior in every way (except for backwards 16-bit capability [but that's what virtual machines are for]).

Like I said, it's approaching 12 years old. It is NOT as secure as Vista, 7, or 8, and it's time for people to move on and upgrade. Did I like it when it was THE OS to use? Yes. But ever since 7 came out I haven't even looked back.

+1 to these points.

12 years in 'computer software years' is a millennium.

Have we met? :D:D:D
I am asking this because I was 100% sure that I was the ONLY one who likes Windows XP lol.
You can add a vote from me for XP. I've got an HP PSC1210 all-in-one printer/copier/scanner that works great in XP but the Win7 drivers don't include such basic functions as print head alignment or cleaning or low ink level warnings. Win7's Fax and Scan functions don't work as well as HP's Toolbox, and the scan and print quality is much poorer.

I've also got software that works great in XP but simply won't run at all under Win7 or Win7's XP VM. Nero Ultra Suite 6, ZD Screen Recorder, and Magix Notation are three examples.

i think any body should keep there os no matter how old it is, but it is unfair for some individuals when they don't have the money to upgrade to an os. i really think os should be treated like cars some people buy brand new cars some people keep there cars for many cars and some people buy used cars. Just imagine if a car is treated like an os like if some drives into gas station with a 1957 chevy bell air and they love there car then the gas station says your cars out of date it is not supported for our gas station, that is really unfair. That is how they are treating os saying it is out of date.

That is what i feel like computer companies threat there old os like. Ya i know there are some early os like the first 3 versions of windows shouldn't be used any more but xp works just fine for every thing that everyone uses today microsoft did a good job making it so i really think they need to keep it up to date until 2016 or 2020. :)

Long live xp......

But life isn't like that

I just got back to reading my own thread. I find the different views on the different MS OS's interesting.

However, I like XP, and I have no desire to move to 7 or 8. But I will do so if I will not be able to download and install any security updates, etc, that have already been made prior to 4/14 when I do a fresh re-install of XP after that date. If I will just still be able to go to Windows Update, have it analyze my system, and download and install all the existing updates, fixes, security patches, etc, I'm good to go.

BTW to all who have suggested Windows VM or other company's VM or even Dosbox, I have tried them, and for some reason or other, even getting support on Windows website for Windows VM, I cannot get my wife's programs to print.

Thanks again for all the info.

i know voyagerfan99 that life is not like that but i was giving an example of how computer companies such as microsoft treating OSes but i'm saying if car companies did the same thing people will go crazy.

Technically, a car built before 1971 needs fuel additives to lubricate the valve seats.

Before 1971, tetraethyl lead was added to gasoline to do just that. After 1971, hardened valve seats became standard on auto engines because unleaded fuels were on the horizon. Running a car built before 1971 with today's unleaded fuel has a risk of burning the valves under prolonged use, so over the counter additives to pour into your tank before each fillup are sold at auto parts stores. They're not cheap.

wow i never knew cars can go out of date i just thought they didn't because I've seen many old skool cars on the roads. so i see why people that have old don't drive them as much because the valves will Hehe.

I am using XP Professional SP3. I would say that I re-install it about every 4-6 months. When I do, within 24 to 48 hours it has downloaded and installs about 80 to 100 security updates, fixes, etc. Then of course there are the few monthly security fixes, etc every month.

I know that XP support is going away in April, 2014. I know this means that MS will not be developing new anti piracy software and doing any new security or software fixes, but does this also mean that the ones that have been developed will go away? or will my machine still download and install all the current fixes that are available?

I appreciate any help.

a forget win xp and install Xubuntu if it's an old machine if is farely new mint14 kde,

Probably old software. Nero 6 is at least 10 years old now I reckon.

I've not found anything that isn't compatible with 7 or 8. I've even gotten Office 97 and Visual Studio 6.0 from 1998 to install on both of them. The only thing I've found that doesn't work on 7 at all is Lotus 1-2-3 but that is ancient software and even kicks up a fuss when you install it on XP.

It's time to let XP go. You can't use everything forever. XP is an OS which will be 12 years old come October, and using an OS that hasn't changed a lot whilst the world around it has says a lot really. :/

Hey Spirit Visual Studio 6.0 CAN be installed on Windows 7 as you just said...,but there is one thing which really goes on my nerves lol...

Version(s) RIGHT AFTER 6.0 which are Visual Studio 2002 (7.0) and Visual Studio 2003 (7.1) CANNOT be installed on Windows 7 lol.
And even Visual Studio 2005 (8.0) cannot be EASILY installed and once you finally install it you also need to install all the fixes and service packs just so it can even work properly.I know .NET 1.0,1.1 and 2.0 aren't new anymore lol,but still...

I am just saying it's an irony that super old Visual Studio 6.0 installs and works with no problems while others cannot or simply having problems...
And yes...I know that Visual Studio 6.0 is not .NET based so that is the main reason why it works since applications made in it are based on machine code instead of .NET code, but still...they could have made that Visual Studio 2002 (.NET 1.0) and 2003 (.NET 1.1) work on Windows 7 too.

I am saying this because I am still making programs for money in old Visual Studio 2002 since Visual Studio 2010 or newer are just SOOOOO expensive right now.I found that a FULL version of Visual Studio 2010 (yes 2010 NOT even 2012 lol) costs around 4000 to 5000 dollars and some with some extras cost even more than 10000 dollars.WAAAAAAAY too much lol...
And I don't want the express editions so until the prices go down A LOT,I will have to stay with Visual Studio 2002 lol.

Besides...every version of Visual Studio WORKS great on Windows XP except the newest Visual Studio 2012.So yeah...XP still rules no matter what lol.
Oh and...I really don't see a reason why Visual Studio 2012 cannot work on XP.I think Microsoft did that on purpose just to kill XP and force people to buy Windows 7 or newer since Visual Studio 2012 CANNOT even work on Windows Vista lol...........BASTARDS!:D
They did that just to force people to buy their newest OS so they can make a lot of money...
I understand them on the other hand lol...,but still they are BASTARDS lol!:D

Nah...considering I am still on XP and Visual Studio 2002,by the time I move ALL THE WAY TO Visual Studio 2010 by using it STILL on Windows XP (since XP fully supports it),there is already going to be Windows 14 and Visual Studio 2024 lol.

When Windows XP support ends, nothing will happen.Microsoft simply won't make any new updates for it anymore and you will have no support for it from Microsoft anymore also.
Many people will simply continue to use it anyway for the next many years. At least I will...at least until 2020.

The problem is that many people stop using an OS just because Microsoft does not support it anymore.(I will never understand that).
But that's not the case with me.As long as everything I do works like a charm on Windows XP then I really see NO REASON to spend money AND time upgrading an operating system just because Microsoft does not support it anymore.Who cares about that lol...I never needed their support anyway.
I mainly use computers for programming and I am STILL using old Visual Studio 2002 (7.0) which can even be installed and used on older Windows 2000.And Windows XP supports Visual Studio versions all up to 2010 (10.0).So by the time I EVEN update Visual Studio from 2002 (7.0) to Visual Studio 2010 (10.0),it will be probably 2020. or 2025. lol.I don't care for instance if Visual Studio 2012 (11.0) is not supported on Windows XP since I have MANY versions of Visual Studio I can update to BEFORE Visual Studio 2012 (11.0).
Besides...I don't like that new .NET framework 4.5 since applications made in it work only in Windows 7 or later. And that's just stupid since MANY people who will buy programs from me still use Windows XP and some schools use even older OS.So what should I tell them?..."To use my software, you must update OPERATING SYSTEM ONLY" lol...
That is a big cost AND time consuming.
Programs I make on Windows XP work on Windows versions starting all the way from Windows 98 first edition and later. On that way I do not need to worry wether my applications will work or not.Since once you disappoint your clients,it is a lot harder for them to come back to you.
Besides...it is a LOT cheaper for them to just pay for my software rather than paying for my software AND new operating system just so that my software can even work lol.The hell with that!:D

So Windows XP will still rule after april 2014.

Cheers!
