New laptop-Correct way to shut down after use

Hp 2000- When my wife is done with it for the night what is the correct way to leave it sit overnight? Just close it? Unplug it? Etc.? Thanks!

If leaving the laptop plugged in 24 hrs a day will destroy your battery.
Don't do it. full charge is good. unplug. Does not take long to charge a lithium.
never run battery down to zero volts and not work. keep above maybe 20%. Do not over charge. Always a shut down at night. never 24 hrs.

Above is not necessarily true with Lithium Ion batteries in modern laptops. See this link: http://batterycare.net/en/guide.html

I read but don't agree on everything. Boiling a battery lithium and not a smart battery and not shut down is a mistake. these are guidelines. I have a Samsung Galaxy and down to 30%. I will will charge in 1-1/2 or 2 hrs. max. Unplugged. All my laptops. charge when done. Not smart batteries either. Lithium though. I say shut it down and unplug. Not arguing. just saying what i think. article was good and general guidelines only.
I refuse to buy like laptops, battery's etc unless smart and stop charging. Have many outside tools. 18 v lithium batteries. smart batteries. leave plugged in 24hrs a day. during the winter but my garage is not freezing. (that would be another nightmare).
They work fine. will shut down. work all year. Dont think all laptops work that way unless getting your wallet out.

Confused?? Yes,Yes I am. How about charge it up to 100%,unplug and then use it when it's got 20-30% and plug it back in? At night should I put it sleep, hibernate, etc.?

Do not keep it plugged in 24/7. My girlfriends brother and sister in law ruined the 9 cell battery I bought her when they had to borrow her laptop for a few months.

My recommendation would be to completely shut it off during the night.

Unless you have an old laptop, the charger stops charging when the charge reaches 100% so there is no need to unplug the AC.

On the other hand, there is no problem unplugging it so, if it makes you sleep better at night, unplug it every night. If you're going to unplug it, I personally would do a complete shutdown since you don't know for sure when the next time will be that you will turn the laptop back on.

One option you could consider is to remove the battery from the laptop before plugging it in, that way there can be no way to overcharge the battery. If you do that, I would recommend putting the battery back in and charging to 100% before attempting to use the laptop with the battery.

Personally, I leave my laptops plugged in 24/7 and rarely shutdown. I set the power options so that the screen blanks after 5 minutes of inactivity while plugged in. Works fine for me. My 5 year old laptop's battery is still going strong and the laptop has spent approximately 75% of it's lifetime plugged in 24/7.
