Antivirus necessary for linux?

My netbook was seeming awfully slow with windows 7 installed so I switched over to xubuntu. It seems to run much smoother so far. It seems simple enough when performing basic tasks. My only concern is internet security. Since I know nothing about linux I am not sure if an antivirus is necessary or not.

Should I install some security software now that my netbook is back up and running? Ihave been using avast and superantispyware on windows. Not sure if they are available for linux as well.

Yeah its pretty stupid that companies only have 2gb max on netbooks especially to run windows 7, even the starter version. Now it would have been fine for XP.

I had bought the windows 7 upgrade for professional as well. It didn't seem to help when I upgraded, but I had paid for it. Not sure if I can get a disk for windows starter and use my upgrade on another system. Otherwise it is of no use anymore.

Yeah, if you put the full version of windows 7 on there then that was the problem. Netbooks are only designed for starter versions and in my honest opinion, they should have made the minimum ram on netbooks as 4gb.

I have had 3 occasions of virus activity in Ubuntu, probably more than most people. As an activist and a government whistle blower I am subject to more attacks than most folks. Clam AV is available free and AVG can be downloaded into Linux. I went to dual boot with Ubuntu for privacy but it didn't last. Gov is resourceful.

IMO I think a GB is enough for W7, with AV, chrome, and aero all running at the same time.

Yeah, it can but usally that's just because there is a lot more then av and chrome running. I would upgrade the RAM to 2 GB.

Just for the sake of clarity.

If you want to run Windows 7 on your PC, here's what it takes:

  • 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
  • 1 gigabyte (GB) RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit)
  • 16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)
  • DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver

These are the bare minimums recommended by microsoft, that does not make them a good idea, personally i would not run win 7 32 bit with less than 2gb ram and win 7 64 bit with less than 4gb

As far as 1gb being enough, i would not even run xp on less than 1gb
