Sound not working on my computer

Hi, so first I'll give you what I believe to be the cause of why the sound is not working on my laptop (laptop not computer):

Cause:
Okay so I'm a computer programmer however in one of my programs I created, while trying to search for one file and delete it I obviously did something wrong and my program deleted every single file that it found. After I managed to stop the program it had deleted most of my files. After re-installing windows xp everything else worked fine apart from having to reinstall the driver for my wireless networking device and the sound didn't work on my laptop. I have tried installing the realtek sound driver multiple times with but still no sound is being played. I doubt its a hardware issue because the sound was working before the program was created.

Symptoms:
- when I go onto control panel -> sounds and audio devices its says that I have no audio device
- when I go to control panel -> sounds and audio devices -> hardware it says that:
intel(r)82801AAAC'97 Audio Controller -> device cannot start (code 10)
- There is no sound control icon appearing at the bottom right of my screen
- If i get an error message a beep is still produced
- even when I put earphones in no sound is still produced.
- when I put earphones in no sound is produced
- when I go onto services.msc windows audio is started.

Any suggestions for how to fix this would be appreciated :)

Can you tell me what motherboard you have if its custom built or what model of pc you have if its store bought computer.

Is your system a factory built machine i.e when you re-installed was it a full factory image with all system drivers built in.

I believe so, I think I had to update my graphics driver and reinstall my wireless device driver (the wireless device is hardwired into my laptop). however apart from that I think everything else was there. Sorry for my hazy memory but I spent about 5 days trying to fix this and then gave up. That was about 2 months ago. Its only recently where i've had more free time to use my laptop more so it started bothering me again.
