Service Pack update failure

I'm trying to help a friend and learn at the same time. This machine has not been used in a while. Just cleaning it up for being real slow. This has been accomplished. Problem now is it is trying to update. Everything downloads and installs with the exception of one:

Microsoft.NET Framework 1.1 SP1 Security Update for Windows 2000 and Windows XP (KB979906).

I know, this is old stuff. Thought maybe some of the folks on here ran into this back in the old days of XP. I have read where they said uninstall all updates and basically start over. Just not sure.

Net framework software is really not needed unless the user has a program that requires it to run. The only program I know that requires this is AMD catalyst software.

This is exactly what I would say.;)

Anyway...have you tryed to completely uninstall all .NET frameworks and all their updates and then install them manually?

Thanks everyone for responding. With your input and others, here is what I did.

I uninstalled Net 1.1 Had to use Revo uninstaller to do it.
I then used .NET Framework Cleanup Tool from Microsoft site
Reinstalled Net 1.1 and the service pack for it.

After that the updates started flowing. I'm now past where I was and even got to service pack 3. YEA!! They are still coming, chunks at a time. I think we got it. I'm going to let it update until it can't update no more. Then move on to speeding this thing up as best I can, but that's another story for another day.

Thanks again for helping. I'm learning a lot and having fun doing it.
