Help me choose security software

Need help in choosing a good free software. I noticed on downloads.com that Avast and AVG seem to be the most popular. What do you use and why?
 
I use Avast now and like it. Used AVG for a few years, used to trust it not sure if I do anymore. Avast has blocked me from being infected when I have clicked on bad links.
 
Thanks everyone. I think I'll go with Avast. Its over 3X the size of the Norton I have, which by the way is the paid for version. But that's OK. The way I see it anything is better than Norton. Again, thank you for sharing your knowledge.
 
What do you mean 3x the size? It doesn't use as much system resources as nortons does.

I was in add/remove programs and saw that Norton was listed as 97.1Mb and Avast (free version) was listed as 360Mb. I just assume this was the space on the hdd that they took up. When you say that it doesn't use as much "system resources", can you explain a little more? I'm not that well versed in this yet. So this is what I think, not what I know. I think system resources would be the processor and the ram???? Anyway, I would like to understand more if you are willing. Thank you for you help. You have been a blessing.
 
Yes, Nortons will use more system resources mainly memory. Plus I find it very intrusive. Lots of settings to adjust to be less cumbersome. I tried it as I have comcast and they provide Nortons free to their users. I think I only had it installed for about 30 minutes when I got tired of it.
 
I also don't recommend AVG anymore. It's become very bloaty and it really slows machines down.

If it is, then the size actually is not a concern, but the system resource they use is. Right? So, how would you know how much of the system resource a program uses?
 
Task manager would tell you how much system memory the processes are using. My Avast program folder is 379mb, which is nothing. I would rather not be bothered constantly by a program asking me if its safe to run this program or not. I install Avast and let it go, I just make sure to do a custom install and not install the software updater program.

I know this is not the forum for this, but thought I would ask. I have searched and cannot find it. I know there is a way to see all the post I make in one place. Like a way to keep tabs on them. In a forum about copiers I use, I can go to my CP and see them. Where would I go on here to do that?

Just click on your name in your post and choose "View posts by Copiman".
