Advice about a gaming pc...

Hello Everyone,

I've been thinking about getting a gaming PC for a little while now, and I've been browsing the models on NCIX.ca. The thing is, I don't know a lot about computers. I've been doing some reading, and I've picked up a little bit, but I would appreciate any help you guys can offer.
My objective is to get a good quality computer that will last me for years.
This is the build I've selected:

1 x MSI GeForce GTX 670 OC Pe 1079MHZ 2GB 6.0GHZ GDDR5 2XDVI HDMI DisplayPort PCI-E Video Card
1 x Intel Core i7 3770K Quad Core HT Unlocked Processor Overclocked to 4.2GHZ NCIXPC Vesta 6350 -ONLY-
1 x Antec Kuhler H2O 920 Liquid CPU Cooling System LGA1155/1156/1366 AM2/AM3/AM3/FM1+ 2400RPM
1 x MSI Z77A-GD65 ATX LGA1155 Z77 DDR3 3PCI-E16 4PCI-E1 SATA3 DVI HDMI VGA DX11 USB3.0 Motherboard
1 x Mushkin Enhanced Blackline Frostbyte 16GB 4X4GB PC3-12800 DDR3-1600 9-9-9-24 Quad Channel Memory Kit
1 x Antec Eleven Hundred Performance Gaming Case XL-ATX 3X5.25 2X2.5 6X3.5IN 2XUSB3 INT No PSU
2 x Antec TriCool 120mm Blue LED Case Fan 3PIN 4PIN w/ 3 Speed Switch
1 x Antec High Current Pro 750W 24PIN ATX12V Active PFC 80 Plus Gold SLI Modular Power Supply 135mm Fan
1 x Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium Edition 64Bit SP1 DVD OEM *for NCIX PC Only*
1 x Seagate Barracuda 2TB 7200RPM SATA3 64MB Cache 3.5in Internal Hard Drive
1 x Mushkin Chronos 120GB 2.5in SATA3 SandForce SF-2281 SSD Solid State Disk Flash Drive
1 x LG GH24NS95 24X SATA Internal DVD Writer Black OEM
1 x Please Use The Onboard Sound Card Integrated On My Motherboard
1 x D-LINK DWA-130 Wireless N USB Adapter 2.4-2.462GHZ 802.11B/G/N

What do you guys think? This build will cost me about 2,000 with taxes. I'm sort of OK with paying that amount, but if there's any way to shave off a few dollars here and there I'm open to it.

Thank you.

You can go cheaper and better in some ways. I wouldn't get it pre-assembled either, I would buy all the parts and build it yourself (since it is usually cheaper and you can choose exactly what you want).

I'd ditch the i7 and go with an i5 instead, it's just as good instead. The 3770K is a generation old now anyway. I would go with an i5 4670K if this is a gaming build instead of the i7, just to save some money.

You'll need a different motherboard for the i5 4670K because it runs on a difference socket. I recommend the Gigabyte GA-Z87X-UD4H or the GA-Z87X-OC (both Gigabyte). Either one of those boards will be sweet.

RAM, you can go 16GB if you like (if you do get 2x8GB so you can upgrade easily to 32GB in the future), but actually 8GB is fine (2x4GB). I like G.Skill RAM but most brands will be fine so long as you stick to 1600MHz or 1866MHz (or faster).

If you are going to have 16GB of RAM, you'll need Windows 7 Pro or Ultimate, since Home will only detect 16GB including RAM on the graphics card. So if you had a 2GB graphics card and 16GB of RAM installed, Home will only use 14GB. Pro or Ult would use all 16GB.

I don't tend to recommend Antec cases, instead I'd go for the NZXT Phantom. It's a much better case than the old 1100. You may also need to change the power supply because some of Antec's PSUs will only fit in their cases (just check that first though). If you do need to change it, anything from XFX, Corsair, OCZ, Seasonic, Silverstone etc will be fine.

SSD wise - I recommend OCZ, Samsung, Crucial and SanDisk drives. I've used Crucial, OCZ and SanDisk drives in the past and I've liked them all. I use an OCZ Vertex 4 128GB right now, it's great and very quick. If you can afford it go for a 256GB drive though.

And finally, with the money you saved on your CPU, get a newer and stronger graphics card. The GTX 670 is great, but it's a generation old now. The GTX 770 is newer and would be what I would use for s build like this. If you can afford, you can get the GTX 780. If you want to consider AMD/ATI the 7950 and 7970 are still good cards, but I'd probably get a 770 or a 780 over either of them.

I hope this helped. :)

I said exactly this on another forum one time, and I got told that isn't true for Windows 7 Home Premium, basically because it's a fake limitation. While what you say is true, W7HPx64 should be the exception.

Did some googling, and now I've read compelling and legit-looking posts on forums and other places stating both things, so I am actually, still to this day, unsure of this.

Back to OP:
I wouldn't use Mushkin SSDs either. I can vouch for Corsair Force GT 120GB, but it's kinda old now, and I would recommend the Samsung 840 series instead.
Also, don't use Corsair Platinum RAM, it's a waste of money. If anything , go Corsair Vengeance Pro. Looks good, brand new and competitively priced.

It is true, trust me from experience. ;)

Easier just to go with Pro or Ultimate.

Alright. I have 16GB + 2GB from the GPU, but I have Professional, and cba to reinstall Home Premium just to check it.

Nice.. I've worked in Langley, Kelowna, and Van City

i live in Calgary now..

welcome to CF

Cool man, i'm from Kelowna :)

I'm currently in the process of building the exact computer that these guys recommended.. Getting excited, just need my GPU (GTX760) :)
