WinXP RPC errors PROBLEM SOLVED!

I wanted to change the thread tittle but it wont let me. This problem has be solved! Thank you computerforum !!!!

I need help. I thought it would be a good idea to speed up my older laptop by clearing out some processes running in the background. I made my way into the services and even started clearing out items that sounded like were not necessary. Little did I know that I was ruining my computer.

I can't cut/paste, can't view properties, some driver software needs RPC to be running. I have read several topics about what could be wrong. Some suggest fixing this via registry, some say I can copy/paste some files from a different computer running windows xp and use DOS to replace the damaged files.

I feel that the RPC is the main process that is holding me up from undoing what I messed up. At the time I didn't know RPC was a service that ran near everything on my computer. I am lucky to have the services that I have now. Though I can't hear and its hard to install new software or make changes.

Please take the time to work with me and find a fix for this problem.

Type ms config in the start box and set your startup back to normal startup.

msconfig'd and selected for normal startup. the laptop now makes beeps on error messages but still no RPC

I can manually start Remote Procedure Call(RPC)locator, but when I try to start Remote Procedure Call(RPC) i get the message -

error 1058:The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it.

You may have actually deleted required files, do you have an xp repair disc ?

sure dont or I would of tried that already. I do have another desktop running windows xp aswell if I need to borrow some files or what not

again thank you all for your suggestions and your time

If you have another desktop running xp then all you need to do is compare services on each machine and either change them to automatic or manual. I'm almost positive that system restore won't even start but have you tried it? Go back to a day before you messed with the services.

I have tried system restore and it doesnt work now. I have gone through the services and tried to start each one manually just going down the list. After several passes I can get most things started just not RPC, I am affraid that I disabled something important and now I can't get it started again.

I will try and find the thread that I found earlier that mentioned replacing the explorer.exe and svhost files(if I remember correctly) from a different computer and let you guys try and talk me through trying that.

Again thank you all for any suggestions.

The thing is though, that most will need to be set to automatic, not manual. That is probably your problem.

You are right and all will be reset once I restart the computer. I once went through my registry and set everything to automatic after restarting I had severe problems and had to refer back to my saved reg. I wonder if a possible solution would be to go to the desktop that is running windows XP and note what the services are set to in there and then fix the laptop's services using the registry again just not turning everything on to automatic.

I'll say this again.... As long as the services on the other machine haven't been messed with just compare services and and change only what needs to be changed. Most will be either manual or automatic but not all manual or all automatic.

Not that simple. To change from manual or automatic you have to use the properties selection when you right click a service. Now nothing happens when I click properties so I can't change anything the way it is.
