Internet Problem With New Notebook

Hello folks. I'm hoping you can help me with an issue I'm having.

I bought a new notebook back in May. I now notice that when the notebook is powered up, even if I don't have a browser open, my router/modem shows constant internet activity taking place.

I'm sure it isn't someone else in the area using my wireless connection, because when I shutdown the laptop, the activity lights on the router/modem stop flashing. I'm assuming that I have picked up something along the way on my

notebook that shouldn't be there.

I've run full scans on all my drives using both Malwarebytes and Windows Defender, and they have found nothing.

Any ideas how I can go about finding the "offender" on my own, manually?

TIA

Is your new notebook running Windows 8? The Live Tiles on the Start screen in Windows 8 are constantly downloading info to keep themselves updated. If you are on a wifi connection with a data cap, you can open the properties for that connection and tell it that it's a "metered connection" and Win 8 will turn much of that stuff off.

Thanks for the reply! Unfortunately, yes, my new notebook is running Win 8. Although I never even see the start screen with the live tiles because I purchased "Startisback", so I have my regular start button, and only see my desktop. Fortunately, I have no data cap, but I suppose I should figure out how to do what you recommend. Thanks again! :)

Even if you don't have a browser open, there is a lot of activity still going on in the background such as Windows updates, other programs checking for updates, security software checking for new definitions, live tiles such as weather and news updating, etc.

Fair enough. As much as I disliked Windows Vista on my old laptop, it never did this, LOL.
