IE "disappeared" from laptop--Help!

My daughter has a new Vaio laptop running Windows 8. First off, I hate W8...though it is a bit better to use with her touchscreen.
But, today she booted up, and no Internet Explorer tile is present; also, the shortcut has disappeared from her desktop. Further, I thought that there was chrome on that computer (though never used) and it seems gone also. I can't even figure out how to get ON the internet to reload IE. Can not seem to find a file for IE, though a search under apps for "internet explorer" does bring up about 40 items...but I can't tell what is what.
This computer has the 30-day Kaspersky virus protection on it from Best Buy, which does expire in 2 days. Any chance that is causing a problem?
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Do a system restore back to a day when everything was there.

Trying the system restore; however, it only gave me an option of one time from late this afternoon...I believe that time was after the issue with IE "disappearing." But we'll see!

Nope, the restore did not fix problem.
Is there a way to do a restore to a point prior...other than the only point given as an option? Need to go back to yesterday I'm assuming.
Is this a commonly encountered issue? Thanks in advance for your help.

I also just noticed that there is both WebRoot SecureAnywhere and a Kaspersky program running on that computer...
I'm trying to boot off the Kaspersky.
Could the two antivirus programs have caused this problem of the disappearing IE?

You need to get rid of one of the antivirus programs. They will conflict with each other and cause issues. I don't think they would cause IE to go missing though. The only thing I can think of is that you may have gotten a malware infection that may have screwed up the icons. Try running this program to see if they reappear.

It usually takes a few minutes to run. Let me know if they come back.

Hi John, thanks for your help with this.
Hate to be "simple," but I can't even figure out how to get online to run that link above on my daughter's computer. Can you please suggest how I can
do it?
Thanks again.

Download it to a usb flash drive or burn the file to a cd on a different computer.

Well, tried to download the file to a USB with my computer...my virus software keeps shutting it down...says there is a Win32 adware or something in there.

Any suggestions....?

Turn off all antivirus programs.
After that let's try something simple first...
Open RUN and type:

IEXPLORE.EXE

That should open the internet explorer.

If not then your Internet Explorer data is messed up and should be reinstalled.

In Windows 8 there are 2 locations for IEXPLORE.EXE:

C:\ProgramFiles\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE

C:\ProgramFiles(x86)\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE

You can also check Windows features.Internet Explorer might be unchecked there. So make sure it's checked and apply that.If it's already checked, uncheck it,apply, restart the computer. After that check it again, apply and restart the computer.

Cheers!

Hi. Thank you for the info. It just appears that IE is just plain gone from that computer. No luck with trying your suggestion..a box pops up saying something to the effect that the program can not be found. It appears at this point I just need to reload IE...but I don't know how to even do that since I can't get that computer to go online. The computer does have a wifi connection to our DSL. But again, just does not seem to have the software to actually get to the internet.
How can I reload IE, if that's the fix?

You will have to download it from another computer and put it on a usb flash drive and install on bad computer. I would say to download either Firefox or pale moon though. IE is a malware magnet.

I agree with johnb35.

You will need to download a WEB browser on some other computer such as Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox then put it on some flash drive and then install it on your computer.

However if you have the Windows disk you can also try to perform the REPAIR process. That will recopy and fix any missing and damaged files.
