Screen black after Windows login

When I start my computer (Win 7 32 bit on a ThinkPad T60P), I am taken to the login screen and after logging in, my screen goes black. I can still see/move my cursor but the screen is black!

I can start in Safe Mode and Windows loads fine. I've tried updating my graphics driver from the Lenovo site (last update was 2008, so that shouldn't be the issue) - I also attempted to use a previous restore point, although the only point was 24 hrs prior which didn't rectify issue.

I can use Ctrl-Alt-Del and go go task manager, etc - I've tried ending explorer.exe and reloading ... still nothing, still black with my mouse cursor.

Any recommendations, please??

In safe mode, follow the steps below to place your computer in “clean boot”.

1. Click the Start orb on your Desktop
2. Type msconfig in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.
3. On the General tab, click Selective Startup.
4. Under Selective Startup, click to clear the Load Startup Items check box.
5. Click the Services tab, click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then click Disable All.
6. Click OK.

When you are prompted, click Restart.

Then systematically re-enable each disabled item until you find the culprit.

Thank you, Okedokey - I tried this ...

I selected Selective Startup with only "Load system services" and "Use original boot configuration" checked - I unchecked "Load startup items".

Next, I disabled all non-Microsoft services.

Result: Same! After logging in, I'm sitting at a black screen with the mouse cursor visible and I can move it around but that's it. Otherwise, I can go right back into safe mode. So, I narrowed down that it's not any non-MS services, right!

Another thing I tried - I can open notepad or word (from the task manager) and they open on top of the black screen. So, the only thing I see is the notepad or word window and the mouse cursor. All else, black!

In safe mode uinstall your Antivirus. I believe that the Antivirus is quarantining the explorer.exe

Another thing to try if it isn't the AV program: Boot in safe mode and via control panel selected the display adapters and disable any you find. The boot normally. Get default video drivers loading and see normally otherwise?

If so, download and install MS Update for Windows 7 KB974431
and see if that lets you run the correct video drivers afterwards.
