3 ram sticks.

I want to upgrade my backup pc, and I already have 2 2gb sticks of memory installed in it. The question is can I buy another 2gb stick which is the exact same model as the other two and have 6gb or are 3 sticks not gonna work because of the mobo is dual channel and not triple channel? So my question is simply can I have 3 ram sticks on a dual channel mobo and have 6gb of memory?

does the board only have 3 slots? and if so why not just split the 2 gig into single sticks for 6 gigs? and keep dual channel if you have 4 slots

No the board has 4 slots that's why I'm not sure if 3 sticks are going to work. I don't want to go 8gig cause that would cost me $80 cause I would have to buy to buy the whole set and I can buy 2gb for $17 and I already have 4gb. The board is MSI P55-CD53.
Here's a link to the manufacturer's website:

And I already have two of these ram sticks and want to add one more: Crucial RM25664BA1339.
And a link to the ram: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148352

The rest of the system is in my sig as backup rig.

My question to you would be what do you do with that system? Do you get close to maxing out your ram usage?

I never use that computer for gaming except for when my friends come over. We play minecraft on it and I get 120 fps but every 20s it drops down to 10fps for about 2s. I thought that these lag spikes are caused by the pc running out of ram. Do you have any other ideas regarding what might be causing the lag spikes? The video card maybe? I don't think it's the cpu...

The whole dual channel vs single channel is a bit of a myth. Yes it will speed things up, but not enough that having not enough RAM is better.

In other words. If your in dual channel with 4gb. If your computer is using 6gb. and using virtual memory. It will be slower then if you had 6gb. in single channel. Using virtual memory hence a space on the harddrive is slow.
