Phone battery got deformed

I have a very very old non smartphone Nokia phone and recently its battery has started popping out of the phone for no reason. I inspected the phone and can't find anything wrong with what's supposed to hold it in place, not really sure HOW its held in place, to tell you the truth, but I can't see anything that could have gotten worn or broken. Now I realized that the sides of the battery are not flat. That is, the sides of the battery which when you put the battery into the phone would be parallel with the keyboard, so, the two largest surfaces on the battery that are parallel to eachother.

I can't remember whether the battery WAS flat originally, but I can't imagine that it wasn't and I can't imagine that anything else could be the problem.

Could the battery somehow have lost shape simply due to use? Would I be able to find a batter for such an old non smart phone (I don't even know what the model is, but I could find out probably if it makes a difference)?

Heat could easily deform a battery. Take it to your service provider and see if you can look at a battery to compare the difference.

If the battery is bulging, that means the cell walls have collapsed and it is now defective.

yes. And the bulge i would think over charging or and shorted.

Sorry, is that a yes to the leaking or yes to this being a normal occurance?

The last bit, you're saying this happened either due to overcharging or shorting (as in short circuit?)? If so it could definitely be overcharging as I'd often leave it plugged in after it would say that its full. So this shouldn't be done?

yes. overcharging can boil and short battery causing a bulge. Never over charge. Not just phones but another is laptop. It will rack a battery. Never run down completely to zero volts either. Eventually it will stop charging to full capacity.

It's hard to overcharge electronics such as phones and laptops these days. They stop charging when fully charged. But definitely don't run the battery down completely.

Thanks, guys.

So, do I have to worry about it leaking or anything, or does that only happen with prehistoric batteries (although this one'd almost qualify as such, I thinK)?

Can I find a new battery for an old non smartphone or are they not even selling those any more?

Your best bet is to stick the model number of the battery into eBay and see what you find.
