I have lately a problem with an older HP Computer I never had before and I suspect the HD. The computer would be extremely slow in anything, (like clicking on "My Computer", or detecting a Flashdrive) and my Real Player stopped working smoothly, playing back anything jerky, as if it had to load the information all the time before displaying it. I suspected first malware or an infection, but am not sure now. In this computer, you can try to repair the system by several means, you can use Restore, or bring it back to the way it came from the factory with DVDs that were made when the computer was new. I have used these DVDs several times with success. Also, I have Acronis based backups, which can bring the computer back to the time the backup was made. I have used this method with success also. Then, as a last resort, I have an original XP OS disk, which I have used many times in home brew computers I assembled.
I have used all these methods to try to get this computer to work, with no avail. It keeps on being slow, and playing back videos has not improved, using any restoring method mentioned. (And this is without connecting it to the Internet, so no malware involved)
I noticed though that when I tried to load in a fresh copy of XP, I could not format the hard drive. It would progress nicely up to 16%, got slower to 17% and then got stuck at 18%, where it would stay forever. I could things going only when I would Quick Format the drive instead of letting it Format normally.
This lets me believe that there is something wrong with the Hard Drive, and that some defect there causes the sudden problems with this computer, which has always served me well.
Any suggestions or comments?
