Choice between these two PSUs:

Good afternoon,

My PSU recently gave up (Suspected lightning strike, confirmed the dead PSU by testing the rig with a different one) and I'm now looking to replace it. Unfortunately stock is limited so I don't have a wide variety, but I'm not looking for anything too special.

I've narrowed it down to these two, I've read good reviews about both of them, but I'd like to see what the community thinks:

  • Antec High Current Gamer HCG-850M 850W
  • Corsair Gaming Series GS800W

My current (dated) rig is:
-Intel i7 920 at stock
-Asus P6T
-Gigabyte HD7850 also at stock
-Two 500GB WD harddrives
-Quite a few case fans, I think around 5, big and small ones. It's a HAF932.

I'd like to have the room to add another graphics card and CrossFire in the future, would the 850/800W be capable of that? There is a third option of the Corsair HX1050 but I even know that's too much. I previously had the HX750 however, and was very impressed with both its quality and performance.

Thank you for the help!

According to this page, 2 7850's in crossfire you will only need 575 watt unit. If you plan on upgrading your cards I would go with a 750 watt.

Sorry for the delayed response.

The supplier I'm getting the PSU's from has the 750 and 850 but with such a small difference in price. But thanks, I'll probably go for whichever is in stock.

Is there anything wrong/against the Corsair GS800W?

It's a good unit but it's one of Corsair's weaker ones I believe. Look at their TX series instead. The TX 750 V2 from Corsair is good.

That Corsair is ok.
But Antec is Modular. You won't need that much cables until you crossfire. Too many cable block the air flow.

That's why I'm more inclined to the Antec or a Corsair HX series.

Are Seasonic units identical to Antec units? Specifically the Seasonic M12 II Evo Edition

EDIT: I ask because in reviews I've seen that the components for the Antecs are all Seasonic.

7850 crossfire doesn't even consume as much power as one 7970.

You would actually be fine with a quality 600w unit, but if you feel you need that extra cushion the CX750M from corsair is cheap and good-

I would consider this PSU ''good'' on a good/better/best scale. Good actually means good in this case, and like I said even the CX600m would be fine for your rig so it is already overkill. For better see my reply below-

Actually the SSR-750RM is the better PSU for pretty much the same price-

It's 80+ gold versus the 80+ bronze.

If you want the best, the Enermax platimax is the best, but that's also why it's $200+

Thank you for the detailed reply 87dtna, I was busy checking out on the Corsair CX750M but they were out of stock, I managed to get the Antec HCG for $5 more than the corsair from a local distribution store. Feel more comfortable with this one as I'm planning some pretty big upgrades in the new year! :D

Thanks for the help everyone, will post a picture in the correct forum tonight

Any upgrade on the CPU will most likely consume around 50-75 watts less. Seriously doubt anything you get will need more than a quality 750w PSU. You could get two R9 290's for Xfire and 750w is still good.

Good thing you got that PSU, it's made by Seasonic and so are some of the models mentioned. It's a good maker and that CX750M is made by CWT which is supposed to be good, maybe but nothing definite.

You did well mate. :)
