Windows 7 Home Premium Suggestion

I have read quite a few of the previous posts on this site regarding security and I am assuming Norton is something to stay away from. I have Comcast as my ISP, so I get Norton Security Suite for free. In addition to that I am also running Advanced System Care 7. What changes should I make to my PC in regards to security. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Get rid of advanced system care. I run free version of avast and run malwarebytes maybe once every few months.

Is Advanced System Care bad? If so, can I still use some of the utilities that Iobit offers such as Smart Defrag, or should I stay away from those as well?

Its junk. Use Ccleaner every couple weeks and thats about it. As far as a third party defragmenter goes, Use Defraggler or Auslogics disk defrag. But honestly, don't need to defrag but once a year maybe and thats only if you install and uninstall programs constantly.

I am now using the free version of Avast as you suggested. Does malwarebytes & Ccleaner do the same thing? If not, which would you suggest I use? Also, what's your opinion of Microsoft Security Essentials? It is already on my PC. Should I uninstall it? By the way, thank you very much for your input.

No, they don't do the same thing. You need to run them about once every couple weeks or so. Uninstall MSE if you already have Avast installed.

One thing I noticed about Malwarebytes new updates is that it detects Windows messenger as an infection.Don't know if it's just a bad update or not...just wanted to let you all know.
So be sure that when you scan your PC with malwarebytes, first check wether you are 100% sure that you want to delete EVERYTHING IT FOUND. ;)
For example...in my case it found 4 infections and all 4 are nothing more but Windows features lol...So be sure to UNSELECT things you know what they are for before removing selected items...

Norton is fine, it's actually very good. The downside is that it's not free (for the majority of us) and Avast is as good but free so we recommend Avast. If you can get Norton for free then keep it.

I used to have Norton until Norton 360 but moved to Avast for financial reasons actually. It caught viruses Avast didn't (did a test on few virus like the MSN one for example).

Norton consistently rates poorly on every test ive ever seen. John's suggestions are spot on imo.

I had Avast and had nothing but problems. Slow web page loading and it slowed down my access to my downloads folder. I uninstalled and installed Panda Cloud and my start up time is super fast now. I do have Bitdefender free on the laptop.

9/10 times I see a computer with an issue related to web connectivity or blocking of some application, Norton is the culprit. I'm with most other people when they say don't use it.
