Trouble when going back from standby

Hi guys, my GF's laptop is having a few problems:

When she comes back from standby (I hope this is the right term, not turned off, not hibernation) her laptop freezes on a black screen and when she restarts it (the hard way) Windows is installing some updates. Last time when it went on standby, it froze on a black screen with the icon of Windows using ressources (the turning circle).

I've searched online a little bit and it seems to be drivers (maybe) so I'd like to check if all her drivers are good (they're all up to date). Is there a software that you'll recommend? Also if you think this is something else, please let me know :)

Thank you!

Specs:
Asus K55VJ
Processor: Intel Core i7 3630QM
Graphics Adapter: NVIDIA GeForce GT 635M

I wouldn't recommend using a third-party application to keep drivers up to date - those kinds of programs tend to do more harm than good, so stay away from those.

It could be the drivers, you could use Device Manager to update them.

Is Windows always installing updates every time she does a hard restart? If so then it may be an issue with Windows Update.

Might also be a bad hard drive - maybe download a tool which will check it for errors (there's a list of them here http://www.computerforum.com/211596-list-hard-drive-diagnostic-utilities-test-your-drive.html)

See how you get on...

Thanks for your answer. I'm starting to think that this a conflict with updates and standby modes. I will check her HDD if it happens again but yeah I guess there is nothing we can do, all her drivers are up to date.

See if you can boot into safe mode, disable stand-by (for the time being), and get those updates installed.
