Do you think the gpu/mobo is dead?

My mom told me this morning that her HP Pavilion g7-1167dx wasn't 'working well'.
When I checked it out, the screen was completely black, getting no signal, but the computer itself was on. The CPU fan is running, the power light is white and WIFI (F12) is orange.

I got no error codes from the CAPS and NumLock lights that are supposed to give an error code if hardware is malfunctioning.
I tried to connect to an external display via VGA and HDMI--I got nothing. I did a 'hard reset' by taking the battery out and holding the power button for 30 seconds, then powering on with only the AC (no battery). Still nothing.

Lastly, I dismantled the whole darn thing to unplug the CMOS battery in the motherboard for about a minute, hoping to reset the BIOS if that was corrupt. I also swapped the HD into my laptop and it worked fine. I tried putting some of my laptop RAM (2Rx8 PC3 8500) into her laptop which had 2Rx8 PC3 10600. The RAM should have worked, right?

All of this leads me to believe the mobo is dead, especially since the external display didn't work. The graphics card is part of the mobo, so if that's it, it might as well be the mobo that's shot.

I was simply wondering if anyone had any ideas on how to get the laptop to give me an error code, or if they had any other ideas on why it's not working, like if it were the CPU. I would think that there would still be display if the CPU is fried, but I'm not sure. I want to be positive the mobo is the problem before forking out $120 for a new one.

Thanks! Sorry for writing so much, just wanted to cover all the bases I've already gone over.

Wouldn't surprise me if the mobo died. It's an HP after all.

Yeah, my dad got her the HP, I wasn't too happy that he didn't ask me first because I've never had a good experience with HP laptops. :gun:

If the CPU was fried, it would still show some kind of display on the screen, wouldn't it?

No it wouldn't. Besides, CPU's rarely ever go bad.

You can try different RAM in it but I doubt that's the problem. You already stripped it down so I know reseating it won't make a difference.

If the CPU is toast you wouldn't get anything on screen. If you remove any and everything you can (ie RAM is pretty easy to take out of a laptop) and turn it on do you get any different results?

edit, sorry missed the spot where you swapped RAM, seems unlikely both sets wouldn't work unless it was mainboard or something similar

Hm. So that leaves me in a predicament then if the CPU is possibly toast. I don't want to order a new mobo if that's not the problem. I think probably is the mobo, I'd just like to be sure. Any ideas on how to test the processor. To my knowledge, she never used the computer on poorly ventilated surfaces. So the CPU should be okay in all likelihood?

But if it was the CPU, you'd think I'd get a blink error, right?

The fact that I'm not getting any blink error makes me believe the mobo is the problem, because without the CPU the, the mobo should be able to do at least the blink error, right?

The CPU is most likely not the error. It's most likely mobo. Like I said, CPU's rarely go bad.

Good, I just wanted a little more peace of mind in thinking it's most likely the mobo.

Thanks for the help Cromewell and voyagerfan99. I appreciate it.
