Desktop USB 3.0 is slower than Laptop USB 3.0

I'm copying files from my desktop HDD to my memory stick using the USB 3.0 port. Speed is about 8 MB/s. I then take the memory stick to my laptop and transfer the files to my laptop HDD using my laptop's 3.0 port. Speed is over 20 MB/s. Why the difference in speed? They're both 3.0 ports.

write speed vs read speed

This. Reads are always faster than writes. If you copied the data from the stick back onto your desktop you'd observe similar speeds as the laptop.

What kind of USB stick are you using? Those still sound like USB 2.0 speeds as well (=<30 MB/s).

PNY 16 GB stick So I guess the thumb drive needs to be 3.0 as well.
