Disk management in Windows 7 for a 1TB HD

New Member
Because of corrupted software and freezes at the windows logo when starting up in Windows 7 Ultimate, I reformatted the hard drive and lost all the original data.

Problem 1. After I reloaded Windows, I re-entered the original ID and licence details; these are not recognised and now I have 30 days to register!

Problem 2. I only have 1 HD, and in Disk Management, the Windows OS and any loaded programmes are all loaded on the first volume only, and the full disk size of 1TB is not recognised, and I can't see how to solve this. This is the information on the disk partitions displayed on the disk management screen: -

First line of Volume .... Factory Image - Layout: Simple, Type: Basic, File system: NTFS, Status: Healthy (System, Active .... etc.), Capacity: 14.32GB, Free Space: 10.57GB, .........

Second line of Volume ..... HP (C), Layout: Simple, Type: Basic, File system: NTFS, Status: Healthy (Boot File, Page File etc......), Capacity: 48.83GB, Free Space: 26.70GB, .........

Third line of Volume .... New Volume: Layout: Simple, Type: Basic, File system: NTFS, Status: Healthy (Primary Partition), Capacity: 868.36GB, Free Space: 868.25GB, .........

Third line of Volume .... O9PROCD01 (D:) Layout: Simple, Type: Basic, File system: CDFS, Status: Healthy (Primary Partition), Capacity: 502MB, Free Space: 0GB, .........

And for the Disk listing: -

Disk 0 only...

Basic,931.51GB, Online, HP (C), 48.53GB NTFS, Healthy (Boot, page file, Crash Dump, primary Partition ...
New Volume 868.36GB NTFS, Healthy, (System, Active, Primary Partition).

There is no Disk 1 but for Disk 2 onwards, these have no entries.

What to do to format this disk correctly?

Hoping someone has the patience to respond, to what is probably a basic solution for most.

The partition new volume needs to be assigned a drive letter before it will show up in "Computer" as a disk drive. Use disk management to assign a drive letter.
 
As John says, but you probably want to "activate" the disk in Disk Management by right clicking on the drive and selecting "import foreign disk", happens to me every time i reinstall.

Thanks for the help so far. I don't want to assign a different drive letter, I want it re-assigned as an "extension" of the C: drive. As I understand it, the operating system can be mounted on the volume, that is currently showing Boot, Page File, Crash Dump and Primary Partition; is this the correct and is volume reserved for the operating system?. Right clicking on the New volume gives the options of "Change Drive Letter and Paths for New Volume", drive letters are shown but C: is not present. It also displays "Allow access to this volume by using the following drive letters and paths".

Maybe I need to re-format the drive to give a volume, that is reserved for the OS only of say 100GB, and have the rest of the drive with either one or two volumes, but contiguous to show only one drive letter as C: in Windows Explorer etc.

Any comments?

When you installed windows, it looks like you created the 48.53gb partition to install windows on and that leaves the remaining balance of 868gb for another partition. As long as the partitions are next to one another on the drive then you can extend C drive and add the 868 gb to that. Go into disk management and right click on the c drive and choose to extend volume.

When I right click on any of the 3 volumes, the "Extend Volume" is grayed out, but the shrink volumes are all available. I suspect these volumes were the original HP volumes allocated as new.

I am now busy reformatting the 1TB hard drive in DOS, it is showing 939203M as being formatted; does this look correct for this Western Digital drive?

For future reference, that's because you can only have two logical partitions on a drive. You need to use DISKPART to make an extended partition, then you can make more partitions in there.

This is probably the way that HP formatted my drive originally to have the operating system, file system and image in 3 separate volumes. Looks like I have more slogging to do. :mad: What is recommended nowadays for the size of the volume for the OS, using Windows 8.1?

Whatever size you want. You can either use the entire drive, or just use a portion of the drive (maybe 80-100GB).
