My computer one night just turns off with no warning. I thought the power supply might have died so I changed it out and still nothing only flicked on for a sec and died out. So I started to unplug my cables to see if it would do anything. While the 12 pin power connector was plugged in it would power up! Next I plugged in the 8 pin connector to the upper left of my MB, with both plugged in nothing happened just flicked on for a sec. I was pretty sure the MB got shorted some how. After looking at the MB i saw the once blue area was a almost brownish green. I bought a new MB but I want to know what could cause this to happen again. My old MB was a Gigabyte 970a 3d3. CPU FX 8120 OC 3.8Ghz, Water cooling, GPU HD 7870 2gb, The case is very well vented with 5 fans all together. The MB is only 2 years old.

It's dead, plain and simple. It should be under warranty with Gigabyte so contact them and RMA it.
 
So it wasn't anything on my end right? Just a bad board? Also this card came with a build from Ibuypower.com so could I still RMA it?

Nothing you did would have caused it to fail. I'd contact Gigabyte first then if they won't help contact ibuypower.
 
Depending on VRM some boards have issues with 8 core setups. I wouldn't overclock at all on that but it should support the stock settings.

The water cooling may have restricted airflow to the VRM area. Since they aren't heatsinked to begin with it may have attributed to the premature failure.

At least you should be able to get it replaced under warranty. :D
Revision 1.3 and 1.4 of that board come with a VRM heatsink, so you might get a replacement that has one attached.

I thought about the mobo not being able to support the cpu, so I ordered a ga-990fx. I'll keep the 970 replacement for a second pc.
