Guys, if you're running Windows XP, you can convince Windows Update to continue giving you the updates that MS has been rolling out to embedded systems (e.g. ATMs, point of sales machines), where security is paramount and upgrading operating systems is not possible (a lot of them in the world).

You can do this by:

  1. Setting a System Restore Point
  2. Opening a new notepad file and copying this into it:

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\WPA\PosReady]
    Installed"=dword:00000001

  3. Save it as as .reg extension and run it by double clicking.
  4. Restart
  5. You will now find a lot of new updates.

Interesting,I wondered what would happen to cash machines once M$ stopped updates for Windows Xp..didn't know they were continuing to support them.

I'm surprised cash machines don't run linux or something more secure.

Many of them still run embedded versions of XP.

I remember a couple of years ago we went to Thetford Forest Park for the day (living in Norfolk it's very close to us). When we went to pay for the parking ticket, we couldn't because the ATM had blue screened.

Oops! :o

Interesting find there though with regards to continuing to receive updates, but I do still believe that people would be best off upgrading to something newer. I know it's difficult to replace all of the ATMs, but the British Government for example are paying Microsoft god knows how much money to keep their XP machines supported for a little longer. Strikes me as being a massive waste of money but there you go.

Guys Windows XP will be around for a LOOONG time.
And as long as Microsoft gets paid for supporting XP to some clients, they don't give a damn lol.

The operating system will only be around as long as that legacy hardware survives, which wont be long at all.

You also have to take into the consideration that not everyone buys new hardware very often...
There are so MANY people who cannot afford new PC and let's be honest...there are TONS of great and strong computers and laptops and netbooks on which XP can be installed together with all the drivers.
And it's going to take a LOOONG time until all that hardware dies lol.

I remember seeing the kiosks at the airport also running Windows XP embedded, I think one was on a blue screen though lol.

Microsoft warns against Windows XP security update hack
http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2014/may/27/microsoft-windows-xp-security-hack-update

"Microsoft warned that Windows XP customers may face problems if they install the updates. “The security updates that could be installed are intended for Windows Embedded and Windows Server 2003 customers and do not fully protect Windows XP customers,” Microsoft said in a statement released to ZDnet. “Windows XP customers also run a significant risk of functionality issues with their machines if they install these updates, as they are not tested against Windows XP.”

xp is dead and it is time to move on.ive had no problem getting win7 to run on old hardware.ive never regretted the move to win7 but i think i will skip 8 and see what happens with windows 9 or 10.

My experience as well -- XP was good, but time to move on. I put 7 on a new build, plus updated another five-year old desktop, no problems or regrets.
Microsoft's warning about the security update hacks might be self-serving, but it also might simply be good advice.

There is nothing about XP that's going to get better soon. Its dead. Didn't matter how many people used 98SE and 2000 when XP was released. They killed updates to 2000 that XP had, even though they would install on 2000. Just to get people to upgrade. Doesn't matter how many people are using XP. Microshaft is killing it, period.
