College Student - what kind of laptop is best for me?

Hey guys,

So I am a college student and my laptop of 4 years just broke and I'm thinking it's time to get a new one as opposed to attempting to fix my old one. That being said, I don't really know a whole lot about computers, so I'm really unsure as to what kind of laptop is best for me. I've always thought MacBooks were beautiful and nice to use, but are they worth the price of nearly $1100? I honestly really only use my laptop for writing papers, occasional research and general Internet usage. I don't really use high-tech visual programs or anything like that. If anyone has any ideas or recommendations as to what would be the best laptop FOR ME and what I would use it for, or simply any reviews on laptops you have and what you like/don't like about them, that'd be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

My only issue with with the $1200 Macbook Pro is the hardware is 2 - 3 years old in technology. There is no reason in 2014 for a computer to cost that much when using 720p display, 3rd gen "i" series intel CPU, Intel HD 4000 and 500 GB RPM HDD.

Apple did the same thing with the Macbook, instead of putting money to redesign the product they will squeeze as many sales as possible for 2 - 3 years and then retire the line.

Uh, what?

A 13" MacBook Pro has the following specs:

13" Retina display 2560x1600
2.4GHz Intel i5 (latest Haswell gen)
Intel Isis Graphics
128GB PCI-E based SSD

I have no idea where you got your specs from. Apple refreshes the MacBook Pro line every year. The current models were refreshed in the fall.

The price he listed suggest this model and no sir this has not been refreshed in a while.

EDIT: If you go to the buy option in the Macbook Pro section of the apple website this is the baseline (cheapest) Mac being offered and I know for a fact this has not been refreshed. Apple just does not want to offer a Pro computer for under 1k for image purposes as we know as old as this hardware is Apple cost to build is less as their is no way they are paying the same price for the same hardware as they did when they released this notebook.

He actually stated $1,100, which is not what either of us posted. The Retina version is only $100 more and offers a lot more, if he is going to school I assumed he was talking about the education discount which brings it down to his price range.

No one buys the non-retina MBP, it's just there to satisfy those who need ethernet an optical drives. It will never be updated.

At the end of the day it is sad when a company is offering a unit at that price and I was right in saying that apple does offer a model so poorly spec. What is even more sad is consumers add fuel to the fire by continuing to buy from a company in which price gouges.

To the OP, use what you want. In my experience in this form most users who ask this question already kind of know what they want to use. If you want a Mac then go for it, my advice is to buy the product when you got serious time to play with the computer just in case you decide you do not like the product you can return the machine.

Just to throw this out there, I bought a 13" Retina MBP and love it. I get 8+ hours of battery life, excellent performance, one of the best laptop displays, and a quality and durable chassis.
