Will I see a Difference in Gaming? (Cpu upgrade)

Hello!

I have a Dell T3400 with a Intel Core2 Duo E6850 @3.00 Ghz, 4Gb of 800 MHz RAM, and a GTX 750 Ti. The problem is, my cpu is terribly bottlenecking the gpu. When running Battlefield 3, my cpu is at 100% load while my gpu is at about 50%.

So, I was thinking about upgrading to a Intel Core2 Quad Q9550. While the single-thread performance is not a lot better than my E6850, the Q9550 is obviously a quad core and has overall better performance. Will I see a noticeable difference in gaming performance? Is it worth the $130-$140? Upgrading to a new mobo is not at option at the moment even though that need to happen in the future. Any input would be great! (If you don't have time to respond in-full, just answer the poll)

You sure will see a difference as the q9550 is much more powerful even at stock speeds. I used my 680 with a q9550 and it was at about 70-80% when the gpu was 100%, but It was overclocked to 3.8Ghz. Im going to guess that dell would not have put in a mobo that will be able to do much of a OC, if at all.
Whether is worth it is up to you and your circumstances.

If you're going to upgrade your CPU at least get something new and get a new motherboard and DDR3 RAM too. No point upgrading from an E6850 to a Q9550. You'd be upgrading old hardware (and wasting money).

As I said in my first post, I cannot upgrade the motherboard at this time for reasons outside of my control. I know I am going to eventually need to upgrade my mobo. I'm trying to keep this thread strictly between performance between those two chips.

No point upgrading from an E6850 to a Q9550. You'd be upgrading old hardware (and wasting money).

Its a shame his system is a Prebuilt Dell or id recommend getting a Q6600/Q6700 and over-clocking.

Q9550 are still overpriced,even second hand so unless you can get one VERY cheap i wouldnt be spending £70+ on a Q9550.

OP,could still look into getting a Q6600/Q6700..they are really cheap now on Ebay like £30..are Quad core and im sure you would see quite a noticeable difference.

I know when i went from my E6300 (Overclocked) to the Q6600 (AT STOCK)the difference in game such as Battlefield and GTA IV was very noticeable..just ran a whole lot better.

I'm not quite sure where you managed to get that assumption from, but anyway.


OP, yes you probably will see a difference. I don't think it's going to be mind blowing different, but it will be different.

If you want AMD look at a 990FX AM3+ board. If you want Intel, look at a Socket 1150 Z97 board.

He has two graphics cards to use and has a post. He needs Socket 2011 for his needs.
