Grad School Laptop

Hi everyone,

I am looking to get a new laptop for grad school (speech pathology). My current laptop from '09 is pretty much shot. I want to get something that will be a small upgrade while keeping my costs low.

I will only need the laptop for papers, web browsing, and streaming music and movies. I'm familiar with Microsoft. I don't want to lead, but it seems like a Chromebook would suit my needs. Is that a difficult adjustment? Will formatting somewhat complex papers with charts and other things be difficult to work with immediately coming from Microsoft? Below are the specs from my old laptop. Sorry for the format, not sure what's all important.

Budget is whatever I need to get a computer that's better than my old one, I'm guessing that shouldn't take more than $500?

14 inches worked well for me, and the lighter the better of course.

As in for CDs/DVDs? I guess I don't think so, but maybe at some point?
