Purchasing W8.1 questions

I'm shopping around for W8.1 64bit. I'm upgrading from XP for my home desktop, so I don't need the Pro version. The prices for W8.1 vary a lot. Softwaresupplysouce.com has the OEM version for $78 and Newegg the full version for $110. What is the RTM version?

The OEM version cannot be transferred to other computers, correct? If I later replace the motherboard on the computer I install W8.1 onto will I be able to reinstall it onto the new motherboard?

Who has the best price on W8.1 now? Is it important to buy an O/S from a trusted source? Thanks for any replies.
 
Yes, its imperative that you buy it from a respectable dealer. It looks like a prebuilt system with windows 8 already installed can be transferred to another system. However, if you build a pc and install windows 8, then you can transfer the license to a different computer.

Best place to get OS software would be newegg, tiger direct, Frys, Microcenter or any decent place that sells computer parts online. Don't go to any off the wall place cause you may get taken.

CPU fan:Ultra X Wind, aluminum socket
 
Do you plan to add more RAM? Unless you have more than 4GB of RAM it's not really worth it to go with 64-bit OS.
 
Get 64-bit.

You need 64-bit to use all 4GB of RAM anyway. If you went with 32-bit you'd only be able to use about 3.5GB of your 4GB.
 
Ok,I'll buy the OEM version from Newegg. If I change my motherboard in the future can I transfer the OEM version onto the new motherboard?
 
Technically no, but I think they have become more relaxed about that since its an older OS. Usually you can just call the activation number and they will reactivate it for you. All depends on what rep you get.

Oops, thought we were talking about win 7 here. With windows 8 you can transfer license to new computer as long as its not a store bought pc such as HP, Toshiba, Asus, etc. As long as you buy the OS then you can transfer it.

Usually you don't even need to ring them up - tends to work fine over the internet for me so long as the key hasn't been activated recently. ;)

And if you do need to ring them up then the automated bots can usually do it for you without a problem.

They have become a lot more relaxed. :)
