hey guys, this is my current machine

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...n&product=5327849&serialnumber=CZC24578HB#N54

now my hard drive got corrupted and i didnt know what to do to recover my stuff so gave it to the computer shop to which i said do not re-install windows but just recover my data and you guy select the recovery option that i had on the system but from the looks of things on the link..it says i couldnt have reinstalled it anyway as it was an oem windows key.

theyv installed windows 8.1 for me, i had 8 previously but im slightly afraid that theyv installed pirated copy and got a product key elsewhere which wasnt my original product key that i had

what i wanted to ask was:

1) on a oem machine can i found out what my previous product key was, even aftr the re-install?

2) i dont think the install or the product key is geniune but im hoping you guys can school me on this, i just want a legit computer running, if this isnt the case shall i buy another product key if thats possible?

please help guys...my mind isnt resting over ths for some odd reason lol

cheers guys

Windows 8 keys aren't like previous versions of Windows where there is a product key on the side of the machine. The key for Windows 8 is stored in the BIOS. All you need to do is install Windows 8 and it automatically inserts the key and activates Windows. No need to worry about that.

On OEM machines, they usually use a volume key to activate the original copy of Windows, so even if you found that product key, it wouldn't work for you to activate. But like I said above, it doesn't pertain to you anyway.

so from what your saying is that my current product key thats on my machine aint geniune then?

No, that is not what I'm saying. Please re-read.

They installed Windows 8 and then ran the upgrade to 8.1.

What makes you think it's pirated?

my bad my apologies, so otherwise iv got the same product key then, but i had windows 8 before and they installed windows 8.1, so the same product key can be used for 8.1?

jus to confirm also updating to 8.1 is free right?
