new ASUS graphics card, now can't change aspect ratio

HI there. I feel this is an easy fix but I just can't seem to work it out. I only watch videos and don't play games on the PC. I have an Intel HD onboard graphics (1024Mb) card that is great but the computer crashes occasionally when playing videos. (I have Intel Pentium 2.6Ghz, CPU G620 4Gb RAM)

I am running XP, SP 3

For part of the trouble shooting I wanted to try an external video card to see if this would stop the computer crashing while playing videos.

I bought a low priced ASUS 1Gb card for $39, model HD 5450 Silent.

But now the aspect ratio is way too wide and I cannot adjust it. Everything on the screen, whether it is internet, pictures in PaintShop or videos, are all too wide, about 30-40% wider than before and distorted. Screensaver slide show pictures are compressed in height. The pages onm internet are so wide I can't see the side text etc

I tried changing the resolution in Desktop / Properties / Settings, but all the ones I tried from lowest to highest are all the same, they just change the overall size. So that doesn't work.

Can anybody offer any advice please? I saw that when installing this graphics card from the CD that was supplied, there was no drivers for XP. Only for Win 7, 8 and 8.1.

Could this be causing it?

I had the same problem when running my new card with a DVI cable. But the other way around.

You need to adjust the overscan in the Catalyst Control Centre.

This is done under the " My digital flat panel" - " Properties flat panel".

As my native laguage are'nt English, I discovered that the properties did'nt displayed the over / under scan setting correctly until I reinstalled the catalyst driver in English instead.

thanks John, I will try that. The IT at work (Internet Technician) said it is because I don't have the correct driver. This card's install CD did not have the driver for XP

thanks for reply but I have no idea what any of those things are except DVI cable, which I tried in addition to the blue VGA cable. I don't have any of those other things on my computer

That's your problem then. Install the drivers John linked and you should be all set :good:

You're welcome.

The Catalyst Control Centre are the Radeon card driver "tool box" for various settings. You should be able to find it by right clicking on any free space on your computer desk.

This driver will support XP 32 bit and your card: http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/desktop?os=Windows XP - Professional/Home&RenderOnServer=true

For 64 bit XP: http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/desktop?os=Windows XP - 64&RenderOnServer=true

Dart77 could you name you graphics card exactly like whats is it ASUS name e.g. HD5450-SL-HM1GD3-L-V2.
Because i find that AMD does a bad job at keeping drivers, but the ASUS website could have the ones you need

Uh, what? No. That's not necessary. Do you know how out of date manufacturer drivers are? His best bet are to get drivers directly from AMD.
 
Hi Guys. thanks for the replies. Now I know what the Catalyst control centre is, since I installed it from the Installation CD. However it only became active once I got the correct driver. And this was found from that link that JohnB gave me. (the IT at work also gave me that same AMD site). I downloaded the driver and then pointed the Instal Wizard to that location and it all became normal operation with the graphics once the system was rebooted. So that was the problem and glad that part is solved, thanks.

The next step is seeing if this new Gr Card solves my crashing problem on video playback. It's a case of elimination. Previous to this I had the Intel HD onboard graphics with 1024 dynamic memory.

So if this new GC doesn't solve the problem, next step is to try new or different RAM. (HDD has already been replaced)
