Weird HDD Problem...

I recently refreshed Windows 8.1 on my HP Envy laptop. Since then my 500gb C Drive shows 0 bytes free of 1gb. In Disk management it says the same on the main list but when I click on it, shows 438.5gb in the pane below.

Can't download, upload, save or recycle any files at all due to insufficient disk space.

Any ideas?

You must have refreshed wrong or something. Can you right click on C drive and click on properties and post a screenshot of it?

I'd run a chkdsk /r C: , and then hit yes when it asks you to run at next boot then reboot. Sometimes your free space will be incorrectly calculated due to file system corruption.

Sorry no because I can't create new files. The 'general' tab on properties says 104gb used space, 334gb free space. capacity 470gb and the box that says 'allow files on this drive to have contents indexed in addition to file properties' is checked.

If you let me know what info you're after I can try to relay it.

I tried that by holding Win+R and typing chkdsk but the black window shows for half a second and then vanishes.

How can you be running out of space when you have 334gb free of 470? How many partitions do you have? Did you install windows to a smaller partition by accident? Access disk management to see what partitions are there.

Do cmd instead, and then you can enter the command, although you have to launch command prompt with administrative privileges.

It's probably easier to hit the Windows key by itself, type cmd and right click the 'Command Prompt' label to run as administrator.
You would also need to include the /r and C: so it would look like the previous post.
