Asus T200 4GB in Europe...

Hi there,

Want to get hold of the Asus T200TA. I live in UK.

There are two models, one with Atom Z3775 and 2GB RAM, and one with Atom Z3795 and 4GB RAM. I have seen a few comments in reviews suggesting that upgraded spec may not give massive improvements in performance (it will be running 64bit OS). It will be my only machine, but is unlikely to have to work hard, mostly web browsing, movie watching, some word processing and light spreadsheet work, and possibly simple video editing and CAD, but this will be rare and I am happy for the machine to have to think a little when I ask it to do these things! Most important for me is battery life, as I live on a boat without permanent AC connection, so if higher spec model will see a drastic reduction in run time then I'd rather stick with lower spec!

Secondly, I have found the upgraded spec for sale easily in America (T200TA-C1-BL) but have struggled to find it in the UK (T200TA CP016P) is only available from amazon.co.uk via Germany, and for high price! I can get from ebay in America for £320, plus import taxes of £100, but in UK cheapest listing is for £505! Seems to be a few available on German websites for around £450, but I am worried they may have German keyboard... Can anyone explain why this is? And let me know best way to proceed... Happy to pay slightly higher price if I get warranty etc, rather than international ebay!

Thanks, and Happy Christmas.

I've had a quick look on some sites I use and I haven't found anything apart from the German imports. I noticed it was about £500 on Amazon imported from Germany but you can get it on eBay for £440 with free delivery, also from Germany (but it only has 2GB RAM): http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/90NB06I4-...ther_Computing_Networking&hash=item4628e15f28 that's a bit pricey for what is by the way.

Not sure why you must have the ASUS. There are plenty of these convertible-type laptops floating around now which are much more readily available. This HP has a stronger CPU, 4GB RAM and a 500GB HDD and costs £329 - might be worth a look? http://www.amazon.co.uk/HP-Pavilion...1419622670&sr=8-6&keywords=convertible+laptop

Or a little more than the imported T200 you can get a Samsung with an i5 and 4GB RAM - much better deal: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-11-...419622732&sr=8-15&keywords=convertible+laptop

So there are other options. :)

Hi there,

Thanks for your reply. I can get the 2GB version for £350 inc delivery here in the UK, which I what I am planning to do if I cannot find a source for the 4GB...

I have trawled many of the reviews, and the Asus wins every time with a balance of battery life, large seperate HD, and also the screen is fully detachable.

As you say £400+ is too expensive for the 2GB, but would it be worth it for the 4GB version? Do you think I will see the difference with what I intend to use the machine for (light use!)

Cheers

No the 4GB version isn't worth £400+ when you can get the HP with better specs for less money or if you are willing to spend £400 and upwards you can get the Samsung with an i5! £400 for an Atom system? Are you kidding me?

The reason why the Asus probably has a good battery life is because it has an Atom CPU which is a low voltage chip but also the lowest-end Intel chip you can get. They're also really slow. I struggle to run Google Chrome on my netbook with an Atom and 2GB RAM so I would definitely recommend you aim for something a bit faster than an Atom if you want to use this machine regularly. I normally don't recommend Celerons but the Celeron in the HP would be a much better choice than an Atom.

2GB RAM is also not enough these days. Aim for 4GB minimum.

I'd encourage you to shop around. There might be a reason why this Asus is hard to get... it's probably been discontinued. ;)

(I'm from the UK too, btw. I'm in Norwich. ;) )

OK, thanks. That's interesting.

I don't know much about chips etc (as you can tell!)

But, the HP you have linked is not the same format, it has a reversible screen, rather than a detachable, which is not what I want at all! And the Samsung only has 128GB of storage, whereas with the other (cheaper) two I am looking at 500GB.

I know I will benefit from 4GB of RAM, and would love to get a faster computer. I am happy to up the budget too, that is not necessarily a limiting factor, but I do want a detachable tablet, with full size keyboard, decent HD and good battery. These are the most important things!

Cheers.

Pretty sure I saw a T200 that only had a 32GB SSD but might be thinking of something completely different.

You might be interested in this Toshiba: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Toshiba-Sat...419717211&sr=8-35&keywords=convertible+tablet

That's the only one I can find with a 500GB HDD. Most of the others with nice CPUs have SSDs presumably to keep the tablet part as thin as possible (and because obviously a HDD spins which is not really ideal for a tablet).

A lot of them have Atoms which are slow. You might want to try an Atom system before you buy one... ;)

Yes, the Asus has a removable HDD (or SSD if you choose), in the keyboard dock. This is one of the things that make it a computer that can be a tablet, rather than a tablet that can become a computer, and it's one of the reasons why I want one. They are sold with only the SSD (which is in the tablet and holds the OS) in either 32 or 64, which must have been what you saw, but adding the HDD to that is no problem...

The Toshiba looks pretty good, but probably doesn't have the battery life I am looking for, manufacturer only claims 5:45, compared to The T200's 9 hours, and in benchmark tests it seems to achieve about half of what the T200 gets. I get that this is probably down to the power requirements of the chip.

How can I try an Atom system? Just in a shop, or do you mean try and get my hands on one for a day or two???

Cheers

Yeah what I recommend is going into a shop and trying out an Atom system. The Atom in my netbook is 3 years old, they may have improved in that time but the netbook still feels quite slow with a fresh install of Windows on an SSD. Has an Atom and 2GB RAM.

I usually take battery life claims with a pinch of salt. Lenovo claimed the battery in my ThinkPad could last up for 11 hours but that was rubbish. More like 3-4 hours at best. But yeah, the reason why the Atom system has a longer battery life is because it does consume less power, so if battery is really important for you then I guess an Atom system is probably what you are after.

It sounds like you are quite set on the Asus but just make sure you try an Atom system out first. I still feel that £400 is a lot for a system with an Atom. Put it this way: they put Atom quad-cores in £99 Windows tablets.
