Can you have to many external hard drives

I have a question is it possible to have to many external hard drives on my PC right now I have 5 I added one the other day and I had some problems the monitor flashed a couple of times and then the computer restarted I then shut down and removed one of the external hard drives my system is a i7 16 gb ram I was just wondering if I was somehow overloading the memory

How would you expect it to 'overload the memory'?

If you are using USB2.0 you should expect a large performance hit when using multiple drives (although it should still work). If everything is on 3.0 or you are using something like eSATA too then no problem.

Sounds like you have other problems with your build. I'd go check and see what kind of blue screen was thrown so you can narrow it down specifically. You can also uncheck 'System Failure->Automatically Restart' from startup and recovery to see the blue screen details on screen when it happens again.

Thank you !

It's possible that they used too much power and pissed off the mobo or PSU (though the monitor flashing is odd). What are your complete system specs?
