New SSD Not Getting It's Advertised Speeds

A couple hours ago I went to my local PC supplies store just to grab an auxiliary cable, but ended up buying a small cheap SSD as well!

The box states it reaches speeds up to:

550 mbs read, comparing it to "Traditional HDD at 126 mbs."
500 mbs write, comparing it to "Traditional HDD as 94 mbs.

On the forums here I've seen a lot about the program Crystal Disk Mark to test the speeds, so I downloaded it and ran it. Results:

194.4 mbs Read
69 mbs Write

This can't be right!?

The SSD is a Silicon Power SATA III SSD 120gb.

Here's how I set it up, maybe the way it's set up is causing the issue?

My motherboard has 4 total SATA ports. 2 of them randomly died a month ago, so I use the other 2 for my DVD-Drive and my Hard Drive.

Because I wanted to make my new SSD my new main drive, but keep the old HDD (500gb) for storage, I purchased a 2 port SATA PCI card. Plugs into PCI, provides two more Sata ports.

Loaded up my PC with the SSD plugged into the new SATA PCI Card, and old HDD plugged in directly to the motherboard SSD, ran some speed tests, got the same results I stated above.

I decided it could've been the SATA PCI Card, so I took it out completely, unplugged my old HDD and plugged my new SSD into one of the 2 working SATA ports on my motherboard.

Same speeds.

Anything that could be at fault? My motherboard? The SATA cable I'm using? No idea d:

Thanks! Was so excited for my new SSD since I've never owned one, and it's not working out d:

After doing some research, I've found many sources say if it's IDE mode it's slow, and an SSD should operate in AHCI.

No idea what any of that means, but in my BIOS settings I managed to located where it says I am using IDE. Tried to change it to AHCI, and Windows failed to boot, so I changed it back to IDE and how I'm here typing this (:

I see many people saying I need to fresh install windows, and change it to AHCI before I do so, so I know I have new questions d:

Basically, what's the best way to do this? I purchased Windows 8 online, so I have no physical disk. Yes it was through Microsoft and yes I have the product key they gave me in an email.

Without a Windows 8 physical CD, how do I:
-Wipe my SSD
-Change it to AHCI
-Reinstall windows without a physical disk.

Thanks d:

Here's how to boot from a USB: http://www.computerforum.com/189015-how-install-os-off-flash-drive.html
I can create an ISO and upload it if you want (I have 8.1 on my laptop).

Otherwise I found this thread on another forum and it might be worth a read.. http://forums.pcper.com/showthread.php?444831-HOWTO-enable-AHCI-mode-after-installing-Windows

found it from this Microsoft Support thread: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...-my-hard/09a0eac7-a775-416f-b30b-219fcaab2ac9

So I just successfully booted using AHCI by changing some regedit settings. I followed the guide here: http://superuser.com/questions/471102/change-from-ide-to-ahci-after-installing-windows-8

I just booted up and ran new speed tests for the SSD and, they've improved! But not as much as I've expected them to. Now I get:

Write: 93 mbs
Read: 250 mbs

Do you still recommend I completely wipe the drive and re install windows, even though I got AHCI working?

Are the speeds good even though they're not close to what the box advertises?

Any other suggestions? (:

(So I'm in AHCI, speeds slightly improved, still not close to advertised speeds)
