Hello,
First off iam not that tech savvy and not a computer geek.I have a hp 2000 note book with windows 8.1 iam trying to program a ham radio. When I installed the cd and tried to download from the radio I get error message 2.And it won't open the comport for me to try and load in the info to program it.I have tried everything I can and still the comport won't open.

How is your radio connected to your computer, is it a USB cable? Usually the software needs to be configured to use the correct COM port. To find this, right click on Computer and go to properties, then device manager, and look under ports. It should tell you the COM number. Then go into your software and under one of the configuration settings select the appropriate COM port.

^ pretty much that.

I included a screenshot with a USB->Serial adapter as an example here:

I know you will think iam lying but under network adapters ports (com&lpt) are not there. Is there another way to find them?

Not sure. But what happened today.I had a tech at Hewlett Packard help me we did not solve the problem. But he gave me his number to call him tomorrow.Because he said we might have to do a windows reinstall. He said it sounds like that might be whats needed.

I probably wouldn't trust his "expertise" if that's the case...

We tried everything possible with the drivers and checked out the usb ports. My next move would be to check with Microsoft.Iam not tech savvy if the people I call for support iam stuck not being able to get the comports to open. And that would mean I will have to program any radio I own manually. And that will wear you out when you want to put in a lot of frequences.

What is the name of the program you are using to program the ham radio and what kinda of cable are you using?

Is this one of those cheap Chinese radios you buy on ebay? Because I could never program mine.

It is a cheap one off of ebay a jet stream.I just ordered a good one from a vendor. But trying to get this one programed.I get good reception and transmit from it just can't use the cd or cable that came with it.Iam told the chip in the cable probably is not going to let it match up for the pc to read it.
