Advice

OK I need some advice. I just got my Asus Z97 Pro in the mail, and Monday I should have my new i5 4690k processor. I TOTALLY forgot about cooling. What should I get. I havent built a coputer in about 10 years so I am a bit behind the times lol. I dont want liquid cooled or anything fancy, just barebones kind of stuff. Can I just buy a heat sink with a fan or will it run too hot.

I will have 12GB ram and 1Tb Hard dtive that will be coming over from my old PC and probably the videocard (which if you can believe it I bought 3 months ago and don't remember what it is lol)

What are your goals?

The CPU comes with a stock one (although it's kind of meh). If you don't envision extreme overclocking but want something a little more quiet then a unit like the Hyper 212 EVO would probably suit.

You could give the stock one a shot and see how it goes first.

The processor will come with a fan, but if you want a good aftermarket cooler, look into the CoolerMaster Hyper 212+.

Perfect, thanks :-)

Any advice on Windows 8.1 Standard vs Pro. No real needed difference right. I play mostly games like Kerbal Space Program and Minecraft (both HEAVILY modded). But I will be switching to PC instead of console gaming so eventually I may need to upgrade some other things but $ is tight atm.

Last question, Can you add more than 1 videocard for multiple screens. Say I have a card with 1 and a motherboard with 1, can I add a second card to get 3 screens? Mure just out of curriosity then anythig else.

What card are you getting? You can connect 2-3 monitors per video card normally.

To be completly honest I dont remember what I have. I wont have more than 1 hooked up for a while anyway. I have my PC hooked up to me 50" TV so I cna use it from across the room on the couch ;-) it was more of a curriousity thing.

Pretty good... You'll be limited to what you can play at good quality settings with that GPU, but it can always be upgraded..

I am not to worried about the graphics yet. i dont play many grapic intensive games yet. It was the processor that was killing me to be honest.

Ill post my final build later today when I start putting it together. I got an SSD 125GB and 1 1Tb SATA HD from a local friend for $100 last night so I have just about got everything I need I hope. lol Stupid me I forgot I needed an ATX case since my current one was ATXMini. what a dope lol

Oh I do have another question tho.

I am going to have Windows 8.1 (might dual boot with a linux so I may need help) boot on the SSD drive. It was suggested by my friend to install my programs on that SSD but have all the ingo like game saves and music and such on the 1Tb HDD. Is that right, will that speed things up as well. I am going for optimal performance (to a point)

SSD Usage Question

Just install bulk data on the HDD. You don't really gain anything by having music and most games or movies on the SSD, so you're generally just wasting the little capacity you have for really no benefit.

Some games benefit a little bit such as MMOs and you'll get a couple seconds faster loading time in other titles but usually you'll just put Windows and your applications on the SSD themselves.

Does anyone know a decent FREE word processing program and Excell program. I do NOT want to give microsoft any $ for things I don't use very often but will at some point need for resume updating and things like that.
