What is windows desktop settings update?

When I logged into Windows 7 tonight I had a blank screen with a message saying “Windows Desktop Settings Update”. I have never seen anything like this in all the 20 years I've used windows.
Since when do Windows update my personal desktop settings and should I be concerned?

Did you recently install any windows updates? Are you running service pack 1?

When left for work this morning there was an update. I just looked at my recent updates for this morning and there was 5 or 6, but no indication of anything for the desktop. It all looked like normal security updates with one malicious software removal tool

Thanks, yes that is exactly what I had and it did that on both my wife's desktop and mine on the same computer. I'm rushing off to work at the moment and will have take another look when I get home. But I guess it is a Windows think and not malware.
